如何做合格公民
“Citizen ”—this word is always tolk by both we and the mass medium. Therefore, I have been regarding “citizen ” as the equivalence of the words “residents ” and “people ” mistakenly before I immerse myself in the preparation of the contest. On the one hand, it’s reasonable because residents and people are all citizens. But on the other hand, it ’s wrong because, according to the laws, residents cannot be seen as citizens if they don ’t enjoy rights and assume obligations. Therefore, to be citizen is to know how to use his rights and undertake his obligations.
A citizen who is not familiar with his rights cannot be regarded as a good citizen. Most people misunderstand the meaning of citizen and think the word of citizen is a modern tool of country to limit the freedom of people. Obviously they have ignored the rights endowed by their laws. For example, our constitution endows us various rights, such as the right to vote and the right of supervision. A good citizen should realize his rights and make good use of them. Most people use the right to vote blindly and pay little attention to it. They don’t realize that only when they have the right to choose the leaders of their country, can they become the master of the country and goods citizens. A resident who don’t know how to take advantage of their rights isn’t a good citizen.
A citizen not only knows how to make good use of his rights, but also understands the importance of obligation. Rights cannot be separated with obligation. A citizen should undertake as many obligations as the rights
given by the government. From the macro perspective, a citizen should safeguard national unity and ethnic solidarity, obey the ethics of the society, and pay taxes and so on. But the obligation also refers to any things which are helpful to the society. For example, recently Xuzhou is trying to build up a national health city. The government has done a lot to achieve this goal, and as a citizen, we should also do our best to realize this target. We can support it through our behaviors, such as the obedience of the laws and the protection of our environment.
