At the moment Lincoln was elected President of America, all the Senators in the Senate felt embarrassed because Lincoln’s father was a cobbler.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most American Senators at that time were children of noble decent who were self-proclaimed superior individuals from high society.
They never would have thought the President they were dealing with was the son of a lowly shoemaker. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Therefore when Lincoln was about to make a speech for the first time in the Senate, there was a Senatorwho wanted to humiliate him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Lincoln was at the podium, an arrogant Senator stood up and said: “Mr. Lincoln, before you start your speech, I hope you can remember you are the son of a cobbler.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All the Senators laughed out loud in thinking even though they could not beat him in election, but insulting him would please them to no end.
When everybody stopped laughing, Lincoln said: “I’m greatly thankful you remind me of my father.
He has passed away, but I will take your advice to heart that I will always be the son of a shoemaker.
I know as a President what I do will never be as good as what my father did as a shoemaker.” ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Senate was in dead silence.
Lincoln turned his head and faced the conceited Senator: “As far as I know, my father made shoes for your family before.
If your shoes do not fit, I can modify them for you.
Even though I am not a great shoemaker, but I have learned the techniques in making shoes from my father since I was little.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then he said to all the Senators: “For anyone in the Senate, if the shoes you are wearing were made by my father and they need repairs, I will do my best to help.
But one thing is for certain—thereis no way I can be as great as he was.
His handicraft was unparalleled.”
In speaking to this point, tears streamed down the cheeks of Lincoln and all the jeers turned into applause of praise.

The hardships of criticism, jeers and slanders sometimes could be the building blocks to self-confidence, elegance and liberty.
