MG'S COMEBACK in china
CNN ANCHOR: The iconic British brand MG has been reborn in the Far East. Cars bearing the classic badge are now rolling off Chinese assembly lines. John Vause takes the driving seat.
JOHN VAUSE: This is the rebirth of a British classic, but now the famous MG brand is owned by the Chinese, assembled by Chinese workers in a factory in the Chinese city of Nanjing. Even so the company's general manager, Mr. Zhang told me "The MG cars we make here have a deep sense of British culture and style." MG Rover has had a troubled past. After peaking in popularity during the 60' the car maker was hit by industrial strife, poor sales and eventually bankruptcy two years ago. That's when Nanjing automobiles stepped in by what was left for one hundred million U.S. dollars. The factories in Britain were taken apart, shipped piece by piece to China and with them went 6,000 British jobs.
BRITISH MAN: We're finished, we're only getting paid till Monday.
JOHN VAUSE: Here about 2,000 Chinese workers earn little more than ten U.S. dollars a day.
JASPER BECKER: They've simply acquired the brand and technology, um directly from, uh from the UK, and it's now effectively going to become a Chinese brand which China will export, uh to the rest of the world.
JOHN VAUSE: Though the new owners have promised to preserve the English character of MG, many of the car's loyal fans are asking "Can a British icon still be British while at the same time made in China?"
RICHARD MONK(MG CAR OWNER'S CLUB): Ah I think some customers would be weary of car that perhaps came dir
ect from China, um, they may consider it not to be an MG.
JOHN VAUSE: The cars made here will be for China's booming domestic market and also for Europe. The first exports could be shipping out as early as August. The manufacturers say ultimately as many as two hundred thousand MGs could roll off these production lines each year. And now they are planning to open another factory in United States where they are hoping to do what no Chinese car maker has ever done before, crack the American market or be it with a British brand. John Vause, CNN, Nanjing.

People living in Fargo, North Dakota are not letting their guard down just yet. There's a new picture that appears to show a rocket on a launch pad in North Korea. Take a look at this; this is the satellite image that comes from the Institute for Science and International Security. North Korea says it's planning to launch a commercial satellite sometime between April 4th and 8th. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Sunday if there's little doubt that the planned launch is designed to bolster North Korea's military capability, both Japan and the U.S. are mobilizing defenses ahead of that launch.
It appears that Tiger Woods is all the way back from knee surgery. Good morning to you from the CNN center in Atlanta, I'm Reggie Aqui. Thanks for checking in. Here is what's happening right NOW IN THE NEWS.
The reinvention of General Motors includes both improving the competitiveness of our operations, but also, we absolutely must -- we can only win if we get the job done in revenues -- selling, marketing, selling great GM cars and trucks today, and selling great GM cars and trucks tomorrow and in the future.
That's the word from Fritz Henderson--GM's new CEO, who spoke to reporters last hour in Detroit. He says his automaker will do whatever it takes to reinvent itself as a successful company, preferably outside of bankruptcy, but he says if that can't be done, the automaker hopes it can in his words to get in and out of bankruptcy. What about Ford? Well, it is now borrowing a page from Hyundai's playbook. It will cover up to one year of payments on any new Ford, Lincoln or Mercury vehicle if the buyer is laid off. The automaker is also offering zero-percent financing on some of its cars. A Ford executive says consumer confidence is the biggest issue in the marketplace right now.
President Obama is on his way to Europe to try and persuade other nations to follow his lead on rescuing the economy. His first stop, well, that will be the G-20 su
mmit in London. The president will then head to Strasbourg, France to meet with the French president. Mr. Obama then heads to Germany to set down with NATO leaders. He'll wrap up his overseas trip in Turkey.
Police in London have given the all-clear after a security scare near the Bank of England in London. Roads leading to the area were closed after a suspicious package was found near the bank. The incident comes just two days before the G-20 summit begins in the British capital.
And keep your eye on your computers. Because a worldwide virus called Conficker could come to life tomorrow, April Fool's Day. Experts think millions of computers running Windows may be infected. But they are not exactly sure what the virus will do. They say it can stop automatic antivirus updates, block certain websites or could possibly steal your financial information. For safety tips, search Microsoft Virus.
