Cassius Clay was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1941. He first became famous in 1960 when he won a gold medal(金牌)at the Olympic Games in Rome. He became a professional boxer in the same year.
Soon Clay became famous for talking about himself, and people called him ―The Louisville Lip.‖ In 1964, the world was shocked when Cassius Clay beat Sonny Liston and became the World Heavyweight Champion(冠军). We all know that the older we get, the more difficult it becomes to remember things. This is because the brain is a muscle(肌肉). The more you use it, the more it works. The ELK Grove High School had a problem. In that school district, too many students showed up for summer school classes. There wasn’t room for all of the students. It was a very busy first day of summer school.
Many different subjects were taught during summer school. On the first morning, the school suddenly realized they had a problem. They didn’t have enough teachers for all of the classes. Students wanted to take many different subjects in summer school. These subjects included math, English, science and gym. The subjects that the school could offer depended on how many teachers they had.
School officials did not expect so many students to show up for summer School. About three thousand children arrived on the first morning. Many more students were not enrolled(录取). They showed up anyway. The extra students surprised the schoolmaster.
Many students spent four hours in the school gym. They were waiting to be placed in different classes. This made many of the students unhappy. A mother was angry that her son didn’t get the classes that he registered(注册) for. She said that he registered three months ago. Instead of history, her son was enrolled in gym. Her son was happy about it, however. He knew that he wouldn’t have any homework! His mother wanted a better system for summer school. She said that the school was new. They should have had a more effective plan.
Students took summer school classes for many reasons. Some were trying to improve a grade. Some were preparing to take a special exam. Students must pass this exam to graduate from high school. Many of the students needed these summer school classes in order to graduate.
Next year, the district wants to improve their summer school system. They will consider offering summer school classes at each school.
