C. George‟s dream was to travel the Americas from top to bottom. He got the idea after he finished a long bike ride. George‟s friend, Allen, also liked riding a bike. The two friends talked and made a plan: they would travel from Alaska to Argentina - by bike.
To pay for the trip, George and Allen worked to save money for a long time. Once they were on the road, they often slept outdoors and ate cheaply. In many places, local people opened their doors to the two friends and gave them food. On their way, they passed deserts, rainforests and mountains. They visited modem cities and ancient places. And they made many friends from all over the world.
Allen had to go back halfway and George continued without him. He spent two years traveling twelve countries. In May 2007, George finally reached Argentina.
The trip taught both men a lot about traveling. What did they learn? Here is some of George‟s advice:
Travel light. You shouldn‟t carry many things with you.
Don‟t plan everything. Then you‟ll be more relaxed, especially if there are problems.
Be polite. One traveler told George, “Nobody wants to fight or tell lies to a nice man.” It‟s true.

His speaking skills and good English won him the top prize.
Sue said his secret to success was reading “very thick” English books. He has read all the seven Harry Potter books, each at least five times. Now he is working on a book on Steve Jobs‟ life.
“These books may be difficult for my age, but reading them encourages me to learn new words,” he said.
Sue likes English-speaking movies. Those great star movies are his favorite.
“Every boy has the dream of becoming a super star one day. Sometimes I dream to be one of them and shout out the English sentences in the movies. It‟s good to mix your interests with learning English.”
It‟s also important to build an English-speaking environment. Sue talks to his classmates and teachers in English all day long at school.
“There‟s no easy way to study English. Just practice, practice and practice!” Sue said.

C. Many people in India live on small farms. They live a quiet and simple life. The family takes care of the farm and animals. The most important animal on the farm is the cow. The cow helps on the farm in two ways. It gives milk to the family, and it works on the farm.
Farmers care about their cows very much. They want their cows to be happy. The farms aren‟t busy at certain times of the year. At these times, people wash and decorate their cows. Twice a year, there are special celebrations for the cows. These celebrations are like Thanksgiving Day in the United States.
Old cows cannot work on farms. In India respect for the cow is widespread, it is not allowed to kill a cow. So farmers send their old cows away from the farm. The cows walk around freely in the streets, which are plentiful in the area. There are special animal hospitals for
old or sick cows. The government and some rich people pay for these hospitals.
People in other countries do not understand why the Indian government spends much money on cows. There are
many poor people in India who need money. People in India care for 200 million cows every year. It is a tradition of thousands of years.

D. My dear friends, as a teacher who has taught English for fifteen years, I have something to say.
Firstly, you should get ready for the new term. Understand clearly that you will learn more difficult subjects in Grade Nine. You will have to spend more time on study. Remember: No pains, no gains.
Secondly, you should learn to relax yourself. You‟d better have a break after you study for more than one and a half hours. You can also walk on the school campus. The fresh air and beautiful sunshine can make you relaxed and pleased.
Thirdly, learn to talk to others. Everyone may have troubles or problems in life. Maybe you don‟t feel like talking to your parents or teachers. You can turn to your friends or someone who you believe in. Maybe they can give you some advice. Do something useful in your mind. Be active in life, which can bring you chance and success.
Fourthly, play sports every day to keep healthy. A strong body is necessary for everyone, so you must save some time to play sports every day. You‟d better have more fresh vegetables, fruit, milk and eat less meat.
Last, believe in yourself and learn from others. Remember that you can do everything well if you try your best.

We used to live in small apartments, now many families have moved into bigger apartments, because a lot of high-rises have been built in the city. Secondly, traffic is getting better. Several bridges have been built over the Huangpu River, and it means people can spend less time travelling from the west side of the river to the east. More than ten metro lines have been completed and it enables us to reach almost every place in the city

C. Dressing up pets is nothing new, but one pet owner has come up with a fresh idea: no clothes, just cardboard.
People used to love those cardboard costumes where you can stick your head out. And using them on cats is much funnier!
The creative person, naming himself cool-man, dresses his cat in such cardboard costumes and takes some pretty lovely photos. His beloved cat “Joy” poses in many cute costumes, such as an astronaut, Super Mario, etc.
Joy is now a real star on the Internet. After cool-man posted the cat‟s photos, there have been over one million viewers in a couple of months!
You can also give it a try with your own pet. All you need is a cardboard box, some markers and a pair of scissors!

D. Greenland is the largest island in the world. It is in the north of Europe. Near Greenland is another island. It is named Iceland. Do you think that Greenland is green and warm? Do you think that Iceland is white with ice? If you do, you are wrong. Not many people live on the big island of Greenland. There may be more people in your hometown than those in all of Greenland. That is because Greenland is not green. Greenland is white. Most of the island is covered with lots of ice. The ice covering Greenland is higher than most of the world‟s tall buildings. What about Iceland? Is it colder
than Greenland? No, it isn‟t. Iceland has ice, but not so much as Greenland. Iceland has a lot of springs, and they give out hot water and steam. The climate is not as cold as Greenland. And there are a lot of people who live on Iceland.

VII. Dear Betty,
I‟m glad to hear that you will visit Shanghai. Shanghai is an international city which has many magnificent places. I have some advice for your two-day trip. First of all, I highly recommend the Oriental Pearl TV Tower. It is one of the tallest buildings in the world. If you reach the top of it, you can enjoy the view of the city of Shanghai clearly. I am sure you will be attracted by the amazing scenery. Besides you shouldn‟t miss Yu Garden when you are in Shanghai. You can learn about the history of Shanghai and taste various local snacks. What‟s more, the Bund is a good place which is worth visiting. There you can see buildings of different architectural styles. By the way, the underground is the most convenient in Shanghai. You can travel to almost every place, but you‟d better not take an underground during rush hours because it is always very crowded at the time. Hope you will have an unforgettable experience in Shanghai.

C. A seeing-eye dog is very special. One good thing for the blind to have a dog is that you can go anywhere in the city safely.
I live in Barcelona, Spain. It‟s a big city, and there are many cars, but my dog Terra goes to work with me every morning and never lets me walk in the street and get hit by a car,
I have a baby boy, Tony, so another good thing is my dog watches out for him, too. I can put the baby in his stroller, and Terra makes sure that we are both okay. I have had Terra for nearly ten years, so she never becomes angry when the baby gets attention.
In the past, people in Spain had to get their seeing-eye dogs from the United States. It was not easy because there weren‟t enough dogs. People had to wait several years. Now there is a school in my city that trains seeing-eye dogs, so it is easier and faster to get dogs. Having a dog means hard work. You have to feed it and wash it in a bath, but I am happy to do this because Terra is a very special friend and helper.

Rose: Okay. I can only tell you what I usually do. Generally speaking, I listen to the teacher attentively and take careful
notes in class. I‟ve developed the habit of previewing and reviewing my lessons before and after class since secondary school. So I know what we are going to learn before class.
Dan: It‟s a good piece of advice. But I can‟t write down the key points of the teacher‟s lecture sometimes. I wonder what
I should do.
Rose: Sometimes I have that problem too, but I check up my notes with other classmates after class.
Dan: It sounds wonderful! Then, may I check up my notes with yours after class?
Rose: OK! We should help each other and lean from each other!

VII. Like most teenagers, I like watching TV. However, I think it is necessary for me to have a TV-turnoff week, because spending too much time on TV has already caused many problems. My eyesight is becoming worse and I can‟t concentrate on my school work; I don‟t have much time for outdoor activities and it is not good for my health. So it‟s time for me to change and a TV-turnoff week is a good idea. In fact, there are many things I can do after school instead of watching TV. I plan to spend some time with my family. I can keep grandparents company by chatting with them about my school life and I can help my mother with housework like washing dishes or sweeping the floor. Besides, I will go out more to breathe the fresh air and smell the sweet flowers rather than sit in front of TV. Being close to nature may help me to reduce stress. If I have time, I may also invite friends to play ball games. It is a great way to strengthen friendship. In brief, a TV-off week will mean a colorful and healthy life. I‟m looking forward to it.

C. Keshon pressed his nose against the glass of the store window for the third time this week. He looked lovingly at the shiny red bike with a yellow bell. As always, the blue price tag seemed to wave loudly at him, “Only $59.99”. At times, Keshon remembered thinking that the sign may as well say “One Million Dollars!” Either way, he did not have the money to buy it.
Today, however, was different. Keshon took his wallet out of his pocket and counted the bills he had been saving from washing the neighbor‟s car and sweeping the road on his block at weekends. He slowly counted $56.75. Soon, the bike would be his.
Just as Keshon was about to walk away, the store manager came to the window. He took away the old sign and put up a new red “sale” sign on the bike. The new price was $54.99. Keshon jumped in the air. He ran into the store with excitement. The store manager gladly accepted Keshon‟s money and handed him the bike. Keshon jumped on his new bike and headed home, smiling proudly the whole way.

D. Many books have been written about “the art of giving”. But what about the art of receiving? Sometimes, receiving a gift can be difficult.
“I remember when I was about twelve years old, my parents bought me a green shirt”, laughs Guo Xiaojing. „i don‟t like it at all, because too be honest, the shirt was really ugly! Still, I lied that I liked it because I knew it would make my parents happy!”
Han Ling agrees. “That sounds like my grandparents! A few years ago, my grandparents gave me an orange sweater for my birthday. I used to wear it every time I visited them, but when I left their house, I took it off! Of course, this made me feel bad. I think it‟s hard to buy clothes for others because people have different tastes.”
To make things easier, some people would rather just give money. In some cultures, however, receiving money can make people uncomfortable. “When someone gives me money, it just makes me think they‟re being lazy,” says John Wilson, „in England, we have a saying: It‟s the thought that counts. When someone gives me money, I feel they didn‟t think at all. I prefer to receive a gift that has some thought behind it. I don‟t mind if it‟s something I don‟t need. If someone has thought about a gift for me, it always makes me happy.”
Different people have very different thoughts on this subject! So maybe the art of receiving is even more difficult
than the art of giving! What do you think?

VII. I think students should be allowed to bring mobile phones to school. First, students need phones to get in touch with their parents. For example, if they need to go somewhere after class, they can call parents easily and let them know it. Secondly, as the owner of the mobile phone, students should decide what they want to do with it. School can advise students to leave phones at home, but it can not order students not to bring it to school. Besides, not allowing phones on campus is not the solution to all the problems at school. For some students, without phones, they will find something else to do like reading novels or drawing pictures. So I think not allowing mobile phones at school is not a good idea.

C. It is well known that Albert Einstein was one of the greatest scientists of all time and he was also a really great person. Here are some interesting stories about him.
When Einstein started to work in America, someone asked him what he needed. He said he needed a desk, some paper and a pencil. He also asked for a big waste-paper basket to hold all of his mistakes. This shows that he knew even the cleverest man in the world can only learn by making mistakes.
Einstein regarded time as very important. He never wore socks and he thought putting on socks was a waste of time as, people already wore shoes. He also thought it was a waste of time remembering things that could quickly be found in a book. That‟s why he never remembered his own number, which was in the phone book. He knew what was worth remembering.
Einstein liked jokes too. Once in an exam a student asked him why all the questions were the same as last year‟s. Einstein replied the questions were the same but the answers were different!

D. Children in Louisa County certainly know what an earthquake feels like. An earthquake happened on August 23rd, 2011 in Louisa County, Virginia, USA.
The Children‟s Museum of Richmond wanted to do something for Louisa‟s schools which had been seriously damaged during the quake. There were many activities for children in the museum. These activities were designed to raise money.
The most interesting one was an explanation of how earthquakes worked by using biscuits and sweets as earth plate and lava. Children learned what an earthquake was and why earthquakes happened.
“They can do this and eat it when it‟s done,‟‟ said Janette Obermueller, a museum educator.
In the museum, children could also learn by playing. They could play with a train, a weather exhibit with smoky-looking clouds and other interesting things.
Local people got into the event for free. Others paid $3 each person, and some people made donations. The event drew about 400 people and raised more than $2,000.
One local person said. “It makes us feel that people care about Louisa.”

C. Four bald men lived in a village. Their heads were as smooth as eggs and the villagers often laughed at them. After days of searching for a doctor in their village to solve their problems, they looked for help in the city.
They found a doctor who could help them. He advised them to wash their heads with the water from a magic well. “You must only wash your head once,” he warned.
The men followed his advice and went home. Soon, their heads were covered with thick black hair. They looked younger and clapped their hands in joy. The villagers praised their good looks and they were very pleased.
The men decided to get married. They thought they would look better if they washed their hair at the well again. They decided to ignore the doctor‟s advice.
Not long after dinner, they climbed over a low wall and walked into the doctor‟s garden quietly. They washed their heads again with the water from the magic well.
Arghh! Painful shouts were heard! The doctor jumped out of his bed and rushed to the garden. He saw them crying bitterly. There were piles of hair on the ground. The doctor could only look at them and shake his head.

D. Welcome to our program. In today‟s show, we‟ll be talking about hobbies. A lot of people choose expensive hobbies like photography and golf. But, some hobbies don‟t cost o lot of money --they can be useful and even kind of cool. A great example of a cheap but cool hobby is plane spotting. How this works is people go to airports and watch the planes take off and land. They like to guess the model of the plane and the year it was built. Almost everyone has a hobby. However, some hobbies are, well, let‟s say, more useful than others.
Take bird-watching. Maybe you don‟t think this is a very useful hobby, but it is. Bird-watching started as a way for people to enjoy nature, but over time it became more useful. Bird-watchers became very interested in protecting nature. They formed groups to find ways to protect wildlife and the environment.
Then there are those who are interested in computers. Before computers became popular, many people thought that computers were very difficult to use. Now, almost everyone uses a computer. But some people are more skillful at it than others and have taken up computer work as a hobby. In fact, some search engines and a lot of websites started as a hobby.

In my opinion, it‟s a good idea for parents to give children pocket money. Having pocket money can give us a sense of independence. We don‟t need to keep asking our parents for money if we have pocket money. In addition, we can learn to manage money at early age.
I have an allowance of 100 yuan a month. I spend most of them on books and stationery and save the rest. I hope that some day I can donate my savings to people who are in great need, such as the poor and the victims of natural disasters.

C. It was the end-of-year party. I had asked my mother to make us cookies. Mom‟s chocolate chips were the best.
But two o‟clock passed, and there was no sign of her. Most of the other mothers had come and gone, dropping off their cakes and chips in the classroom. The party went on, but I wouldn‟t leave the window. The three o‟clock bell soon took me away from my thoughts. I took my bag and walked out for home.
The house was empty when I arrived. My heart was filled with anger. For the first time in my life, my mother had made me disappointed. I was lying on my bed when I heard her coming. “Robbie,” she called out. “Where are you?” She was looking for me from room to room, but I kept silent.
When she entered my room, I didn‟t move. “I‟m so sorry,” she said. “I got busy and forgot.” She began to laugh. I couldn‟t believe it. I turned over and found that she wasn‟t laughing but crying. “I‟m sorry to have disappointed my boy,” she cried like a little girl. I had never seen my mother cry.
“It‟s OK, Mom,” I said. “We didn‟t need those cookies. There was plenty of food to eat. Don‟t cry. It‟s all right.” We held each other in a long hug

D. Bennett Olson, an American young man used a special way to get himself noticed when he was looking for a job. He bought some ad space near downtown Minneapolis and put his face on an electronic billboard. On the billboard, it said, “Offer me a job.”
Olson came up with this idea when he lost his job in March. Luckily, the idea worked. After a month‟s job hunting and several interviews, Olson found a sales and marketing position. Even though Olson‟s method might seem a bit expensive, it was useful and effective. “You should do something special to make yourself stand out from the big crowd,” said Steve Hine, from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
According to a recent study, the directors of big companies usually spend only about six seconds looking at a written personal introduction before deciding whether or not to make the job offer to the person. And it is hard for graduates to find a job in today‟s job market. In 2011, nearly 54 percent of college graduates under the age of 25 were either jobless or didn‟t find a job they liked.

C. Today, many people are watching TV. So why shouldn‟t dogs have their own channel? Now, a new TV channel that is just for dogs has opened in California in the USA. The 24-hour channel is called DOGTV.
The creators of DOGTV have spent four years making TV programs for dogs. These programs can make dogs relax and feel happy. There will be some special music for dogs and some other things that dogs like. They says many people have to leave their dogs at home during the day and they feel bad about it, because what dogs do mostly during the day is sleep and the dogs are always lonely. They also say that they don‟t want dogs to sit and watch TV for hours, and that‟s why each dog show lasts only 15 minutes. For many dog owners, they just want to create a relaxing environment for their dogs. So DOGTV is becoming very popular. Now the DOGTV is free, but the TV station is thinking about charging money for the channel next year.

During the past three years in the middle school, I have had many unforgettable experiences. One of them was when our class prepared for the choir contest. In order to win the contest, we went all out for it. During the week before the contest, we practised singing in our free time. Although it was a hard job, every classmate took it seriously and did their best. Thanks to our efforts, we won the first prize. Hearing the exciting news, we were all wild with joy. The moment we got the prize, an old saying hit my mind— No pains, no gains. It was hard work, but during the course of preparation, we developed friendship, confidence as well as understanding.

C. Sue and Alan had been dating for many years. Sue knew that Alan wanted to marry her, and she wanted to marry Alan. She waited patiently for him to ask her to marry him but he never said anything about it.
This made Sue unhappy. She was nearly thirty. She believed that if Alan did not marry her soon, she might never marry. She wanted to have a husband and a family of her own.
One evening, as they were walking home after a movie, she said, “Alan, don‟t you think it is time you asked me something?”
Alan thought for a moment. He knew what she was thinking about. At last he said, “I'm sorry, Sue, but I don‟t think I have anything to ask you at this time.”
“Then I will have to ask you, Alan,” she stopped walking and looked at him.
“Alan,” she said, “we‟ve known each other for ten years. I love you and you love me. Will you marry me?”
Alan took hold of Sue‟s hand.
“Sue,” he said, “I want to marry you, but we cannot get married yet. We have nowhere to live. I do not have much money and neither do you. We cannot buy a place of our own.”
“That isn‟t important,” Sue said. “We can live with your parents.”
Alan shook his head.
“Fm sorry but that isn‟t possible.”
“Why not?” Sue asked.
“Because my parents are still living with their parents,” he explained.

C. Nancy, 12, lives in the USA. She took part in a kids‟ magazine‟s competition and won a trip to Asia.
Kids turned in articles to National World Kids. The magazine asked the kids to write about nature and send photos too. Nancy thinks nature is an amazing thing. “Things in nature are the creation of God. They‟re truly beautiful,” she wrote in her article.
Her photo is of an old small hut in a forest. Nancy wrote that she watched the hut for at least thirty minutes. “The longer I stayed, the more stories I heard about the place.”
It was Nancy‟s love for nature that won her the competition. She and 14 other American kids will form a team and travel to Asia for 12 days. They will go to three countries and visit the rain forest and see wild animals there.

D. Do you like garlic? Many people hate it because of its smell. But one person‟s poison is another man‟s cure. Actually garlic is very good for our health.
In Nanjing, a nursery school offers sweet pickled garlic to children every day after class. Why do they choose garlic instead of many children‟s favourite foods like milk and bread? One of the teachers says, “Garlic is good for children‟s health. We want to make sure that our kids are in good health.”
Unsurprisingly, not every child likes the smell or taste of garlic. So the school holds some activities to help children know about the vegetable. They ask children to make garlic dolls, plant garlic bulbs and watch them grow. When children get to know the plant and make friends with it, they are more willing to eat it as an ordinary food.
Garlic is now a popular health supplement in both the west and China. It may become a trend for garlic to be an after-class snack in the near future.

VII. What I learned from a past experience
It happened when I was a junior high school student. We had a test after class. If we didn‟t pass the test, the teacher would punish us. My classmate who sat behind me begged me to show my answer to him during the test. I really didn‟t want to do it, so I turned him down. However, I changed my mind and decided to help him because I was afraid of losing his friendship. The test began; I was so nervous that I acted as clumsily as an elephant. Naturally we were caught by the teacher, who looked angrily at the two of us. I sat on my chair, feeling every eye upon me. My face went red and I wished there were a hole in the ground for me to hide. All my classmates knew about this, which made me feel really ashamed. The experience tells me that it is important to say no to what we don‟t want to do. All we need is a little courage and confidence.

C. Kitty is a Chinese girl in the 8th grade. Now, she is in a British language school.
Everything is new for her. Every morning from 9:30 to 12:30 she is in the classroom learning English grammar and new words. She has lunch in the school dining hall. There is a lot of traditional British food. In the afternoons and evenings, she is free to do what she wants to, but she cannot go shopping or stay in her bedroom and she must speak English.
Of course, Kitty is worried about her exams. “Don‟t worry too much about this,” her teacher said. “The exams are not very difficult, but you should try your best. Remember that cars in England drive on the left, so you need to be careful when you cross the road. Last year, a Russian student was hit by a car when he looked the wrong way. Luckily, he was not hurt.”

C. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born in 1904. He was famous because of the books he wrote for children.
Dr Seuss wrote his first book for children in 1937. A number of publishers refused to publish it. They said it was too different. A friend finally published it. Soon other successful books followed. Over the years, he wrote more than forty children‟s books. They were fun to read. By the middle 1940s, Dr Seuss had become one of the best-loved and most successful writers of children‟s books. He liked helping children. In 1954, Life magazine published a report about school children who could not read. The report said that many children‟s books weren‟t interesting. Dr Seuss decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read,
In 1957, Dr Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 225 words to write the book. This was about the number of words a six-year-old should be able to read. The story is about a cat who tries to entertain two children on a rainy day while their mother is away from home. The cat is not like normal cats. It talks. The book was an immediate success. It was an interesting story and was easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today many adults say it is still one of the stories they like best.

D. What do you want to be when you grow up? A teacher? A doctor? How about an ice-cream taster?
Yes, there really is a job where you can get paid to taste ice cream. Just ask John Harrison an “Official Taste Tester” for the past 21 years. Testing helps manufacturers to be sure of a product‟s quality. During his career Harrison has been responsible for approving large quantities of the sweet ice cream—as well as for developing over 75 flavors.
Some people think that it would be easy to do this job; after all, you just have to like ice cream, right? No—there‟s more to the job than that, says Harrison, who has a degree in chemistry. He points out that a dairy or food-science degree would be very useful to someone wanting a career in this “cool” field.
In a typical morning on the job, Harrison tastes 60 ice cream samples (样品). He lets the ice cream warm up to about 12℉. Harrison explains: “You get more flavor from warmer ice cream, which is why some kids like to stir it, creating ice-cream soup.”
While the ice cream warms up, Harrison looks over the samples and grades each one its appearance. “Tasting begins with the eyes,” he explains. He checks to see if the ice cream is attractive and asks himself, “Dose the product have the right color?” Next it‟s time to taste!
Continuing to think up new ideas, try out new flavors, and test samples from so many kinds of ice cream each day keeps Harrison busy but happy—working at one cool job.

93. I‟d like to buy things from the Body Shop. Its products are environmentally friendly and won‟t harm the planet. Besides, they don‟t cost a lot of money, so ordinary people can afford it. (Any reasonable answer is acceptable.) VII. Stress
Stress is a common feeling and everyone may experience it at one time or another in their life. As a junior high
three student, my stress mainly comes from the worry about my academic performance/my exam results. The competition to enter a good senior high school is cruel. I feel worried before tests even though I feel well prepared for it because I know a careless mistake can cost me the chance to enter a good school. The expectations of the parents are another source of my anxiety/stress. I‟m afraid that I will disappoint them if I don‟t do well in exams. But I know that stress is a negative feeling and I need to deal with it properly.
When I feel stressed, I will try different ways to calm myself down. Sometimes I will lie in bed and listen to some light music to help me fall asleep, for I believe enough sleep is the first step to tight stress. Other times I go out for a run, which helps me to forget about my worries for the moment. In addition, sharing feelings with a friend is a great way to reduce stress. Your friends understand your situations better than anybody else and will comfort and support you.
Stress is part of modem life and we must learn to deal with it in a clever way.

C. Mark Twain was a great writer. He wrote many good stories. A lot of people like his stories. He gave many speeches
during his life time.
One day Mark Twain was going to give a speech. Before having dinner, he went to a barber‟s shop to have a haircut. “Is it your first time to come here?” asked the barber.
“Yes, it‟s the first time,” answered Mark Twain.
“Mark Twain will come and give a speech this evening,” the barber said. “You are so lucky, aren‟t you?”

“No, there are no tickets left now.”

D. I took a long walk in the local nature park this morning. I do that almost every morning. It really makes a great start to the day! I usually walk up this nice long road that goes back into the woods. It is quiet, pleasant and there are so many tall green trees.
As I was walking back down this road, on my way back to the car, I passed a man who was sitting on the grass by the roadside. He was breathing hard and had difficulty even in standing up. I walked over to him and asked if he was okay; he said that he had tried to walk too far and didn‟t feel very well at the moment. According to his situation as well as what he told me, I could tell that he really needed some water. Unfortunately, there is no place to get water in the nature park. Sometimes I bring bottled water and leave it in my car. So I ran quickly towards my car, got in and drove back up to the road. When I saw the man lying there, I immediately got out and gave him the bottle of water. Then I gave him a ride back to his car, about two kilometers away from the park. He was so thankful that he held my hands tightly for quite some time!

VII. As children, swimming may be one of your favorite activities on hot summer days, because it brings you a lot of fun. However, if you are not careful enough, it can also be very dangerous, or even cost your life. Here are some important rules you should always bear in mind when going swimming. First of all, it‟s necessary to get your body warmed up before you throw yourself into cool water and always remember not to go swimming with a full stomach. Secondly, you‟d better not swim alone in unknown rivers or ponds and it‟s definitely not wise to jump into the deep-water area unless you are good at swimming. Most importantly, ask adults around for help instead of jumping into
the water to save your friends when you see them in trouble. Remembering all the rules above will guarantee you a safe and interesting summer holiday.

C. Yesterday, a group of bees attacked 52 people, causing great fear and disorder in two incidents. In one case, around 9 in the morning, 50 students from No. 1 Middle School were attacked by bees when they were walking to the amusement park in Song Jiang County. The attack started when a grade one boy threw a stone at a flying bee. More bees
began to circle around overhead, and soon it was too late for them to run away.
A teacher and 16 students were taken to the National University Hospital and another 34 students to the nearby Women and Children‟s Hospital. All were sent home by 6 in the evening except four students who have been kept for observation.
In the other case, an elderly woman was attacked by a group of bees just outside the supermarket in Lan Hua Road at about 2 pm. She tried to drive them away with a plastic bag but they continued their attack. Fortunately, some workers nearby heard the noise and came to help. The bees finally flew away when the workers burned newspapers to chase them off with the smoke. The woman was wounded on the nose, ears and mouth and was taken to the hospital immediately.

D. Christmas Eve is the quietest night in the year in my hometown. It always reminds me of the famous Christmas carol, Silent Night. The music is slow and soft and it shows the feeling that Christians experience on this special night. Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas. During the day, it is not quiet at all. The streets of my town are full of people doing their last minute Christmas shopping. Most offices close early, so the roads are crowded with traffic at two o‟clock in the afternoon. All business seems to come to an end by five o‟clock, and people hurry home to spend Christmas Eve with their families.
By seven o‟clock all the streets are empty. The cars and people have disappeared. You can begin to feel the magic of Christmas Eve. Everything is quiet. The night is dark and the air is cold, but the houses are all bright. There is a warm yellow glow from each window. Family members get together for a meal, parents put up the Christmas tree and tell the children Christmas stories. Outside, houses are decorated with colored lights and pictures of Father Christmas.
I love Christmas Eve and the peace that it brings. It is really a silent night where all is calm and all is bright.

VII. Dear Mike,
How are you? I‟m really glad that you are interested in traditional Chinese festivals. In your letter, you mentioned that you would like to know more about Spring Festival. Actually it is the most important traditional festival in our country. It usually lasts for 15 days.
Days before the festival, we clean our houses because we think doing some cleaning can sweep any bad luck. We decorate our houses with paper cuts. On the eve of the festival, family members get together and have big meals. Then we watch the Spring Festival Gala on TV. At midnight, we set off fireworks to welcome the New Year. During the festival, kids get lucky money from old people. We also visit relatives - and friends. How happy we feel during Spring
Festival!
Best wishes!
Yours,
Liu Wei

C. A Frenchman went to a small Italian town and was staying with his wife at the best hotel there. One night, he went out for a walk lone. It was late and the street was dark and quiet. Suddenly he felt someone behind him. He turned his head and saw an Italian young man who quickly walked past him. The man was nearly out of sight when the Frenchman suddenly found that his watch was gone. He thought that it must be the Italian who had taken his watch. He decided to follow him and get back the watch.
Soon the Frenchman caught up with the Italian. Neither of them understood the other‟s language. The Frenchman frightened the Italian with his fist and pointed at the Italian‟s watch. In the end the Italian gave up his watch to the Frenchman.
When he returned to the hotel, the Frenchman told his wife what had happened. He was greatly surprised when his wife pointed to the watch on the table. Now he realized that he had made a terrible mistake and robbed the Italian of his watch.

D. As every parent knows, if you have children, you worry about them all the time. However, it seems that these days we‟re worrying about our kids a lot more than we used to. Are we trying to protect our children too much and will this cause problems in later life?
Kids in Britain used to walk to school every day in the past, but now parents don‟t let their children go out on their own in case something bad happens to them. If children stay indoors all the time, they will become weak. This means they will have health problems in later life.
The danger of letting your kids go out by themselves is smaller than you might think. The media makes parents worry about children‟s safety. But children are safer now than they have ever been. If parents want their kids to grow up healthy, they shouldn‟t protect them so much. Children need to make decisions themselves.
Over 27% of British children are now overweight, partly because they spend too much of their free time playing computer games and watching TV. But if kids never go outside, they can‟t learn to look after themselves in the real world.
So far, we can learn that if you want happy and healthy kids, give them back their freedom.

C. A car drew up outside the hotel and a young man got out. Mrs. Jekins said to the young man, “What can I do for you, sir?” “I‟m looking for my uncle, Mr. White. I think he is staying here,” the young man said. “He was staying here,” Mrs. Jekins said. “But I‟m afraid that he went back to London yesterday.” “Oh dear,” said the young man, looking sad, “I was told that he was going to stay here until the end of the month. At least, that is what his children told me when I rang up his house.” “Quite right,' said Mrs. Jekins. “He wanted to stay here the whole of July as he always does. But yesterday someone called him on the phone to say that one of his friends was ill. So he caught the train back to London at once.” “I wrote him a letter to say that I was coming,” the young man said. “I‟ve had all this trouble for nothing. Well, since he isn‟t here, I won‟t wait any longer.” He thanked Mrs. Jekins and went out. Mrs. Jekins went to the window and watched him drive off. When his car could not be seen, she called out, “You can come out now, Mr. White. He‟s gone.” Mr. White came out of the bedroom. He had been waiting there. “Many thanks, Mrs Jekins,” he said laughing. “You did that very well. These nephews of mine never give me any peace. That young man is the worst of them all. As you see, when he needs money, he even follows into the country. Well, perhaps next time he won‟t tell me by writing me a letter.”

C. Hawaii has always been a magic name to people who like traveling. People from all over the world dream of seeing the beautiful islands in the middle of the ocean. It‟s always one of their dreams to watch the sun going down. The sun drops like a ball of bright fire into the sea, and it drops so quickly that you can even see it move.
About two thousand years ago, the first people went to Hawaii in a very small boat. They found the beautiful white sand beaches. But it was difficult for people to go to Hawaii at that time. And there were no big hotels like the ones today. Nowadays more and more people go to Hawaii and they can get there in different ways. Lots of nice big hotels have
been built in recent years. However, the scenery in Hawaii hasn‟t changed much. The nice beaches are still there. People often have a peaceful time, taking a walk along the water in the morning. At night, they get together to hold parties, chatting and dancing. So if you‟re thinking about relaxing yourself, Hawaii is surely the first place for you to choose.

D. Every day, it is easy to see advertisements in English all around us. Look at your own bags and clothes, and your classmates‟. Often bags and clothes show the name of the company that made them. This is a popular form. Sometimes a special picture or symbol called a logo is also used.
It is common to see advertisements on TV and hear them on the radio. Most advertisements are very short because a short sentence is easy for people to say and remember. Nike, for example, has a simple English sentence which is used all around the world: “Just do it.” Advertisements often use funny situations as well. It is simple to remember it.
All advertisements are designed to make people buy a product. An advertisement for a soft drink, for example, might show a group of young people who are having fun. The young people are all drinking the soft drink. Then you hear a voice, “Why don‟t you buy this drink and be like these people? You can be young and modem.‟ You might think that advertisements are not after you, but the next time you buy a soft drink, ask yourself this question: Why am I just buying this product?
