Technology has also changed the way that many sports are performed. Take one example---the pole vault (撑杆跳). The inclusion of a landing mat obviously made a big difference to the vaulting style(方式) as athletes no longer needed to worry about hurting themselves as they fell. Without these worries, athletes no longer needed to worry about the crossbar as the uprights are now fitted
with light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that measure (测量) how high the athlete vaulted. Technology has even been to the advantage of swimmers. New pools have been designed to reduce wave interference and sports scientists have even developed a new style of swimming that increases buoyancy and reduces drag in the water.

It’s hard to believe how times have changed since the first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, on 6th April 1896. In fact, cameras and stopwatches were not used. Until the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.
Today technology has completely revolutionized (changed) sports. Take sports equipment (装备) for example. Very often, new-born babies are not beautiful. They are wrinkled (多皱的) or hairless, or they have an angry look on their faces. They seem to say, “Get away! I hate everybody.” But to a parent, that hairless, wrinkled, angry-faced baby is the most beautiful and perfect child in the world. When that proud father or mother asks you “Well, what do you think—isn’t she beautiful?”, what are you going to say? Is this the time for the truth? Of course not! You look that proud father in the eye and say, “Yes, she is! She’s really a beauty. She’s one in a million. She’s going to be a movie star! I can tell! She’s as beautiful as a picture.”

There are a number of phrases built on the word “put”, among which is the expression “putting one on”. When one finds it difficult to believe what you said, he may look at you more closely and ask, “Are you putting me on?” He doesn’t think you are serious. Perhaps, you are joking with him, laughing at him, trying to test his reaction. People who try to put you on are more often just joking,
having some pleasant friendly fun. There are people who like to play jokes on friends, to put them on in strange ways, some funny, some not. This is especially true on April 1st, April Fools’ Day. Year after year, a number of people let themselves be fooled by the same joke. They just forget what happened to them the year before.
One of these often repeated jokes is about a telephone call. The caller changes his voice and tells his friends a certain Mr. Fox calls him and asks him to make a quick reply to the given number, which is the telephone number of the National Zoo. Unthinkingly, the friend quickly makes his call and asks for Mr. Fox.
The man on the other end says, “Who?”
“Mr. Fox. I don’t know his full name. Please hurry.”
The man at the other end answers, “We have no Mr. Fox here”. Then he realizes it is a joke and he has heard it before. And he begins to laugh and says, “Look, friend, this is the zoo. Somebody is pulling your leg, putting you on.”
“Good God,” the friend says to himself, “How foolish I am!” But he thinks about it and can’t help having a good laugh over it.
30. This text is mainly about _______.

B. the meaning of “putting one on” and how to use it
C. why people are fooled by each other
D. April 1st, a day when people will make fun of each other
