Philosophy of Mind
New Ideas in Psychology,Frontiers in Psychology,Educational Philosophy and Theory等专业刊物上发表了若干文章,出席许多重要的学术会议并做了如Prospects and problems for an enacted theory of perceptual
consciousness,Attunement, habits, and knowing what to do等报告,具有很高的学术知名度。
The course gives a systematic in-depth discussion of a number of central problems in Western philosophy of mind and cognitive science. Topics such as qualia,
consciousness, intentionality, 1. person/ 3. person epistemic asymmetry and mental causation are investigated from classical positions such as dualism, identity theory, behaviourism, functionalism, non-reductive physicalism, eliminativism, representationalism and phenomenology. Along the discussion of the systematic issues, a number of essential auxiliary concepts will find their introduction, such as ‘reduction’, ‘explanation’, ‘identity’, ‘state’ and ‘property’. Although the course predominantly has a systematically approach to positions, problems and arguments, the succession of lectures will to some extent mirror the historical development in philosophy of mind that has taken place since the beginning of the 20th century. Also a number of lines will be drawn to earlier thinkers from the Western tradition, such as René Descartes, Thomas Hobbes and
Aristotle, who have played crucial roles for shaping the landscape into the form we know of, and wrestle with, today.
The core focus of the course is the mind-body problem. Apparently, the bodily properties are different from those characterizing the mind, which at the same time makes a reductive account problematic and makes the relation between the mind and body intractable, if not downright mysterious: Thus (i) The causal role of mental states, (ii) the peculiar feature of mental states that they are ‘about something’ (‘intentionality’) and (iii) the existence of ‘qualia’ – the specific qualitative properties of the ways we consciously experience the world – give rise to ‘an
explanatory gap’ with respect to our understanding of the relation between the brain and consciousness. This is ‘the hard problem of consciousness’ as David Chalmers denoted it in 1996, and it points in two different methodological directions for cognitive science : The 1. person approach, forcefully argued for by phenomenologically oriented thinkers, and a 3. person approach, predominantly taking side with natural science.
Reading material will be sent out to participants one month in advance. For your curiosity, you may begin by reading Thomas Nagel’s paper ‘What Is It Like to Be a Bat? The Philosophical Review, vol. 83 (4), pp. 435-450 (1974).

有關知識本質的問題,或如何定義知識這個概念,Sosa的回答建基於一種以表現為基礎的規範性與AAA(Accuracy, Adroitness, and Aptness)模型之上。

According to Michael Huemer’s phenomenal conservatism, if it seems to you that p, then you have some degree of defeasible or even indefeasible justification for believing that p. This is a version of internalism because seemings are internal to the subject. It is also a version of foundationalism since the view allows for various kinds of immediate justification, and thus is consistent with the possibility of basic beliefs. Phenomenal conservatism is closely related to the view James Pryor calls dogmatism, according to which one can have defeasible justification, J, for believing that p without having antecedent
justification for rejecting defeaters for J. For example, one can have justification for believing that one has hands without having antecedent justification for denying that one is a brain-in-a-vat. Huemer’s phenomenal conservatism and Pryor’s dogmatism are both opposed by:
Stewart Cohen’s holism,
the kind of coherentism Laurence BonJour advocated in his 1985 book The Structure of
Empirical Knowledge,
the kind of classical foundationalism advocated by Richard Fumerton and by BonJour
since his foundationalist turn
and by internalist reliabilism, which is the view I myself advocate.
During the course of this five day seminar, we will discuss the following questions, among others:
What are seemings?
Are all seemings a source of justification?
Are some beliefs justified by things other than seemings?
Is the rejection of phenomenal conservatism, as Huemer claims, self-defeating?
Does phenomenal conservatism satisfy internalist standards for justification?
Is phenomenal conservatism more plausible than classical foundationalism?
