2012年CCTV中国经济年度人物 The CCTV Economic Person of the Year honor has been awarded since the year 2000 to those deemed the most professional and influential in China's economic development. It is not just China's
This year, candidates are mainly from five main industries, namely, information
technology, home life and travel, industrial production, daily commodities and financial investment.
The number of winners in the information technology industry is on the decrease, while those in the home life and travel industry and daily commodities industry remain unchanged, and the number of winners in industrial production and financial investment are on the rise. Shi Shusi, Director of Workers Daily Weekly, says this indicates the growth highlights of China's economy.
The award winners in the past 12 years have included more than 20 industries. Among them, professionals from the automobile, electronic home appliances, IT manufacturing and finance have accounted for the most winners.
Three of the four industries involved manufacturing—an indication of China's position as a manufacturing giant.
But do changes in the industries of winners mean the fall of some pillar industries? Liu Xiaoqing, Director of China News Weekly, doesn't believe so.
After collecting and screening the nominees for the awards, the selecting committee drew up a list of 139 recommended candidates and sent it out to more than 200 organizations and judges.
The final winner will be announced tomorrow.
U.S. student arrested over shooting threat A student was arrested Friday for allegedly threatening to shoot inside a school in the U.S. state of Oklahoma, local media reported. Police arrested Sammy Chavez, 18, in the early morning at a residence in west Bartlesville, Oklahoma, on an arrest warrant for threats to kill, according to local TV channel FOX23. Bartlesville police said officials from Bartlesville High School reported that a student talked about
Officers began an immediate search for the suspect, who was not at school on Thursday, and located him at a residence in Bartlesville early Friday morning, according to the report.
According to court documents, the suspect tried to recruit other students to assist him in a plot to lure other students into the school auditorium, shut the doors and shoot them. Student witnesses also reported that the teenager claimed he would place bombs by the school doors.
Police believed he was trying to obtain a map or blueprint of the school. He reportedly told a teacher that he had recently purchased a gun and would use it to shoot over the weekend.
Bartlesville police said the incident is still under investigation and they currently have no further details. The arrest came on the same day when an elementary school shooting left 20 children and 8 adults dead in the U.S. state of Connecticut, the second deadliest in U.S. history only next to the Virginia Tech Massacre in April 2007, which claimed 33 lives.
声音低沉的女性竞选更有优势
You vote for politicians based on their views, right? That's how it works in theory. But other factors can sway your vote. Like a politician's voice. Because studies show that the deeper the voice, the more electable the candidate. And not just for men. Deeper voiced women have an advantage over other women, even when they're running for positions traditionally held by women, like the school board or PTA president. So says a study in the journal PLoS ONE. [Rindy C. Anderson and Casey A. Klofstad, Preference for Leaders with Masculine Voices Holds in the Case of Feminine Leadership Roles]
Researchers played undergrads recordings like this. [Women’s voices.] Then they asked the students to vote for one of them for the school board or the PTA. In each mock election, the deeper voiced woman snagged about 70 percent of the votes.
Women's voices naturally deepen with age, so the researchers say we might be biased to select older women as leaders. And previous studies have shown that women with deeper voices are seen as more competent, trustworthy and strong. Margaret Thatcher used that to her advantage—she was famously coached to deepen her voice. Other politicians might do well to follow her lead, when they make their pitch to voters.
