Listening in English learning
Is listening a passive or active skill? In my opinion, Listening involves the active selecting and interpreting of information coming from auditory clues so that a listener can identify what is happening and what is being expressed. To be specific, listening involves Identifying information, searching memories, relating that information to those memories, filling it in the proper place, creating a new place for it , using it when needed
As is known to all, the learning of a language starts from listening. Because listening is one of the most essential ways to get information. In comparison to English, Chinese is more difficult to study. However, we learn it very well. Maybe it sounds very amazing. In fact, it is quiet natural. From the day we were born, whenever and wherever we have been, we always can listen the voice of Chinese. With such perfect language environment, we can learn Chinese well naturally. From that, we can see if we listen English every day, we are able to learn it very well. So listening is very important in English learning.
Listening plays a fundamental role in foreign language acquisition .
Among the four basic skills in English learning, listening is the basic, and the most important skill. Listening comprehension is the essential parts in nowadays various proficiency tests, no matter English or the other language. But it is also the most difficult of all the learning skills for learners to master. When listening, listeners follow the speaker, thinking about what the speaker is saying and what is going on in the mind of the speaker, guessing the speaker‟s opinions and attitudes and catching the true meaning of the speaker‟s words. Listening itself accounts for almost half of the commutative activities in one‟s daily life.
For a long time, as for students, the final aim of learning a subject is to take exams, get high marks. Hence, during the English teaching process, teachers spend much time showing their students how to master grammar and how to improve reading and writing skills in a class. Listening plays a supporting role and is not paid attention to by teachers.
The task of language teachers includes not only teaching the language but also teaching the skill to learn a language. To learn English well, teachers need to develop students' listening skill. But teachers always regard listening as listening exam. They neglect their students 'level of knowledge capabilities, and don't attach importance to feedback from students. These indirectly result in not ideal teaching effectiveness. On the other hand teaching listening skills is one of the most difficult tasks for an English successful listening teacher. It is frustrating for teacher because there are no rules as in grammar teaching.
English usually appears some problems exactly on Phonetics and Phonology, such as the mistakes on pronunciation and intonation. Therefore some basic knowledge about English Phonetics and Phonology will directly influence students‟ listening comprehension.
Vocabulary is the building materials of languages, so students must master enough vocabularies if they want to improve their listening ability. However, in china, many middle school students do not have abundant vocabulary. So, when they hear unfamiliar words in listening, they become nervous and ponder the word.
Grammar plays an important part in the analysis of written sentence structure and sentence pattern. However, in china many students also lack of systematic grammar knowledge.
When do listening comprehension, students always try their best to get the meaning of each
words, and each sentences. Once they meet a new word or a difficulty sentence, they will stop to think. It is doubtless they can‟t catch up with the speed any more. In fact, it is unnecessary to know every word, every sentence; they should only catch the main idea and grasp the major point.
We were given two ears but only one mouth, because listening is twice as hard as talking." Though listening is rather difficult for us, we have a series of ways to get over it. Therefore, this is a long journey. This paper analyses some reasons that cause students weak ability in listening and explores some possible and effective solutions to solve the issues. It relates both teachers 'teaching and students „learning. They should combine listening with other English skills. What's more, teachers must foster students „interests and motivation of listening. Students should come over scare psychology and set up self-confidence. At the same time, they should enrich their vocabularies. Students need to do more training and master some listening skills. It is an enduring and formidable subject matter to improve the English listening ability. Teachers and students must struggle tirelessly in the future. The theory goes along with the practice. We should apply to those approaches to real listening teaching and learning process.
Unfortunately, my listening is very poor. I think it must be the biggest obstacle on my way of learning English. Listening is one part of the test that I get the lowest points. I always find I cannot keep pace with the speed of teachers‟ speaking or radio, especially many unknown vocabularies in their conversations. Because when I listen some strange words, I will stop to think what the meanings of those words are. As a result, I miss a lot of information. What‟s worse, if I cannot grasp the main idea of their conversations, I will keep my attention away from their talks quickly. So it leads my listening to be poor further. However, sometimes I can get the general idea of the conversation if I were familiar to the background knowledge. Here are several problems in my listening:
ⅠEvery time I do listening, I try to seize every word.
Ⅱ I often do test-related exercises to improve my listening.
Ⅲ I usually turn on English radio and let it broadcast while I am doing other things. Ⅳ I always read the tape script when I listen to the material the first time.
With those problems, I enter into the class, English Language learning strategies and study skills. In this course, I learn a lot of listening skills some of which I have never known before. Firstly, purposes of listening. If you know what you are listen to and for, you may anticipate what will be said and focus on the information you want, and you can thus improve listening efficiency. For example, if you are listening to a test material, you can make the most use of the information from the options and your background knowledge to image what they will say. Secondly, arranging your time. Listening to a foreign language is intense work and you can easily get tired. To keep your listening efficient, each time you listening, do not last for more than an hour. Of course you can arrange several periods of time for listening in one day. In the terms of me, I may keep listening to some English materials for more than an hour, but in the next several days, I may listen to nothing. Apparently, it‟s very unreasonable. Thirdly, stress and intonation. Stress of English is often put on the part that the speaker emphasizes. Stress may indicate the speaker‟s purpose or attitude, and in many cases it is where the answers to questions are. In English, rising tone is usually used to indicate doubt and negation, and falling tone to show assertion. It is of much use for us to do the English test. Finally, listening
and other skills. In real life, you usually need to listen and give response. Listening and speaking are inseparable, and oral activities prepare you for real life communication. And reading, especially reading aloud is beneficial to listening because you can compare you pronunciation with the standard one, and reading is another stimulus for listening.
Now the course is finished. I have learnt a lot of strategies and skills about English learning. Besides, the course inspires me profoundly. And the most important to us is how to use and practice them. Therefore, it is necessary to make a plan to improve my listening. Firstly, arranging time. Everyday I must set 30 minutes aside. And I have to spend the time on intensive listening particularly. I can listen extensively when walking or before sleeping. Secondly, choosing listening materials. I should listen to the test-related exercises more in the next month, because the CET6 is coming. Apart from it, I should listen to other materials at the same time. For example, VOA, BBS and so on. Because at the end of the day my final target is not to pass those tests. Thirdly, I should improve my speaking, reading and writing abilities. The four parts are an inseparable unit. I should speak English in the class bravely. And I can also imitate others‟ pronunciation after class. I must read English loudly every morning. Accumulating vocabulary is the foundation of English listening. I should take it down when I meet unknown word.
As the old saying goes, “persistence is the key to a successful open.” Improving listening ability consists not in how perfect your plan is, but in how to put it into practice. As is known to all, a language learning is a long process. I believe I can insist on the plan, I will study English well.
