Countries to watch

BETWEEN the 1960s and the 1990s, the economies of South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore and Taiwan were called the "Four Asian Tigers". They took the world by storm because of their high rates of economic growth.
Now the world is looking at another group of economies, called the "BRICs". Earlier this month the foreign ministers (外交部长) of Brazil, Russia, India and China met in Russia. They talked about working together on a series of issues (问题), including the lack (缺乏) of food in the world today, energy and climate change.
The BRIC countries are "the biggest centers of economic growth. They have more than half the planet''s population and they will play a much bigger role in world affairs (事务)," said Russian official Boris Malakhov.
The name, "BRIC" was first used by Goldman Sachs, the world''s largest investment (投资) bank.In the bank''s 2003 report, Goldman Sachs said that by 2050 these four economies will have moved past those of the US, France, Germany, the UK, Japan and Italy.
According to the report, the four countries can work well with each other. China and India are strong industrial (工业的) countries and good at selling services. Brazil and Russia are rich in natural resources (资源), such as oil and minerals (矿产). They could act as major raw material (原材料) suppliers (供应商) to the first two.
"For these four nations to work together would not only be good for them but for the whole world," said China''s Foreign Minister (外交部长) Yang Jiechi. In 2009 foreign ministers from the four countries will have their next meeting in India.

Bonus
BRICs由巴西、俄罗斯、印度和中国四个国家英文单词的首字母拼合而成(Brazil, Russia, India, China),与bricks (砖) 读音完全一样,所以被称为"金砖四国"。 郑学一对一初二英语阅读理解二
Su raises spirits
Su Xing
EVERYONE has their own way to help the people in the quake-hit area. Pop star Allen Su, 24, has done more than just donate money.
He has made a song called We're together (《我们在一起》) to cheer up the earthquake victims. "I hope my singing will give them the confidence to stay alive and rebuild their homes," he said.
He is taking part in charity events to raise money for the Sichuan people. He said that his attitude to life has changed. "Peace in the world seems much more important to me now.
We tolerate (包容) the terrible things nature does to us, yet we pick on other people's smallest faults."
Everybody talks about the 8.5 point score Su got in his ELTS (雅思) exam. But he doesn't like to speak of it. "High test scores don't mean anything," he told Teens. "The important thing is to be able to put your talents to good use." He spent seven years studying in Australia. He said the experience of finding yourself in a strange place, and of having to speak in a foreign language, was educational. "I had no choice but to speak English," he said. "But the effect was that my language skills really
improved."
Su has always gone after what he wants. Now he hopes he can encourage the earthquake victims to face the future bravely. "Young people are just at the beginning of life's journey," he said. "They have the time and strength to put the past behind them and make something of their lives."

“IS she still alive? Where is she? I want to see her at once!”
Jiang Dejia, a Junior 2 student in Shifang Yinghua Middle School in Deyang, said this when she was rescued (营救) from the rubble of a school building hit by the May 12 earthquake.
“She” is a Junior 3 girl from the same school called Liao Li.
Liao is a Junior 3 student who was also buried (被埋) in the remains of the school.
Jiang and Liao didn’t know each other before the earthquake. But they inspired each other to keep going during the two scary days they spent trapped (被困).
Later Liao was rescued too.
“We were on the edge of death but friendship got us through. I’ll never forget it as long as I live,” said Jiang.
Hundreds of thousands of students like Jiang and Liao were in the same situation on May 12. On that day, the biggest earthquake in China for more than 30 years hit Wenchuan, Sichuan. Several thousand middle school students and teachers ended up buried. Buildings went down and cities were leveled (夷平).
As of Friday the earthquake has killed about 23,000 across the country. The number is very likely to grow.
While people in the affected (受影响的) areas are facing death and disease, they know the whole nation is standing firmly behind them.
Only two hours after the quake, Premier Wen Jiabao got on a plane to Chengdu. The 66-year-old has been in the worst-hit areas to lead rescue work. Once he fell down and hurt his arm in the rubble, but he brushed off offers of help.
Soldiers and policemen were not able to get into Wenchuan at first because of bad weather and blocked roads. About one day after the quake, the first army group reached the epicenter (震中) on foot. Since then, soldiers have been digging with their fingers to try to find people alive. Helicopters (直升机) have been called in to airdrop (空投) food, water and medicine for people in the quake-hit areas. Medical teams have been sent in. People are racing against time to save lives.
People outside of Sichuan, including overseas Chinese and people in other countries, are offering money, blood (血) and materials to help.

Student bags a hit
FROM June 1, plastic bags were no longer free in stores and supermarkets. What do people use to hold their shopping now? What do they think of the new rule?
The students of Beijing 101 Middle School did a survey to find the answer. With the help of the Sony Company, they designed a questionnaire (问卷) and made their own shopping bags. On June 5, the students gave the bags away to people in the street. Anyone who wanted a free bag had to fill in a questionnaire. Good and bad
"The people were very enthusiastic (热心的) about the bags," said Li Xuan, 14, one of the students. "It only took us 40 minutes to give away about 800 bags."
Li said that most of the people were middle-aged and elderly. They said they were "optimistic (乐观的)" about the future of shopping bags.
But these people also said there was a problem with getting a bag if you couldn't make one yourself.
"They said that shopping bags in supermarkets are too expensive," said Li. "Many just carry their shopping in their hands."
They said a reasonable price for a shopping bag is about two yuan, Li said. Zhang Yue, 16, another student, said that people also care about the quality of the shopping bag and how much it can hold.
Young people, however, want their bags to be nice and to look cool. Currently, most supermarkets' shopping bags only have the store's brand (商标).
"I fully agree with them," said Zhang. "I would like pictures of my favorite cartoon character on my shopping bag."
