Introduction
As far as we are concerned, in recent years, more and more Korean stars and plays and television shows set foot in China, along with many products “made in Korea”, which opened a great flow of Korean popular culture. What on earth did this phenomenon bring up? What kind of effects it could make on Chinese college students? Faced with it, should we encourage or limit? Different people have different ideas. Certainly, it is worth pondering. The influences of “K-Pop” on Chinese college students are too wide and profound, which covers both positive aspects and negative effects. College students are a great group full of penetrating perspectives and acute judgments, as well as much sensitive to something fashionable. This writing is devoting to help Chinese college students have a better understanding and correct attitude to “Korean Wave” affects. Furthermore, we need to know the concrete effects of “K-Pop” on Chinese college students, and how to reply these effects, especially how the college answering the negative effects for college students.
1. A General Introduction to “K-Pop”
What is “K-Pop”? Or what is “Korean Wave”? Many people have tried to define it. Generally speaking, “Korean Wave” is a shortened form of Korean phenomenon of mass culture launched around Asia since the 1990s, which contains “Korean plays”, “Korean music”, “Korean films” and “Korean games and others ” . “others” includes cosmetology, football, mobile phones, cars and so on. At present, it is not hard to see that the most influential and popular are Korean plays and Korean music and the newly-appreciated television shows.
In fact, we are so familiar with some Korean plays, such as Endless Love, All A bout Eve and Temptation of Wife all attracted much wider television audience since it was imported into China mainland. As well as lots of Korean icon groups, like EXO, Super Junior, Girls’ Generation, Big Bang, are all owing millions of fans around China, once landing in China, who would be surrounded by such crowds and powerful holler. Referring to Korean television shows, they are comparative newly but much I
attractive. From the Love Letter, X-Man, We Got Married to Dad, Were Are We Going?, K-POP Star, Running Man, Infinite Challenge, those shows are copied by various Chinese television stations and get so many audience attention. Those above all prove that “Korean Wave” penetrates our lives a lot.
2. The concrete effects of “K-Pop” on Chinese College Students
2.1 on cultural aspects
Since the “Korean Wave” appears in China, college students, as the much more fashionable and innovative group, are willing to touch the new culture flow. And the most obvious sign is that more and more college students select to learn Korean or study in Korea. At the moment, many universities launch Korean major. With the development of internet, the websites become a camp for Koreaphile. They are wild about discussing Korean clothes, makeup, celebrity, hotels and Korean music. As well, the prevalence of “K-Pop” has still strengthened the communication between Chinese-Korean students through cultural and academic activities, as football match and Go match are both attracting many students. Moreover, universities in both countries communicate more and more frequently. Each year, there are many Exchange Students between two countries, and the connection become blooming.
2.2on social life
2.2.1 The choices of clothes and restaurants, etc.
“Korean Wave” has brought fresh foreign culture experience for Chinese, especial college students. It easy to find that many stores with strong distinctly Korean, such as Korean restaurants, beauty salon, fitness center. Lots of Chinese people are fond of patronizing in these kinds of shops to experience special Korean amorous feelings. Among the college students, it is a hit to travel around South Korea. In supermarkets and department stores, Korean pickle and chili sauce are always popular. Generally, for college students, especial girls, Korean-typed clothes and cosmetics are more attractive. Sometimes, we enjoy following some idols’ dress-ups. Because of those factors, the industrial structure of our country in some degree has gradually changed. Many factories give up its original industrial channel but choose something more I
Korean.
2.2.2the view of love values
It was reported that a person’s view of marriage was influenced most by his family or friends, and the second factor is the roles the television plays and films made. From this, we could understand the importance of Korean dramas to Chinese college students. Korean plays usually present a sound and aesthete love between the hero and heroin with a strong Cinderella sense. On the hand, the audiences appreciate this kind of precious love. On the other hand, they would feel so bitter in the real life that the big contrast could make they depressed so much. After all, not every man is tall, rich and handsome, as the same, not every girl white, wealthy and pretty.
3. the positive aspects for Chinese college students
3.1The Enrichments of Knowledge and Lives
With more and more Korean culture landing, we are entitled to have much more choices of dramas, plays, music, clothes and so on, which broadens our horizons and enriches our experiences. We have the more chances to connect with Korean culture and understand some specified Korean manners and customs.
3.2the attention back to Chinese traditional culture—Confucianism
The prevalence of Korean plays owes to many aspects. Besides the vivid picture, affecting plot and fine melody, the perfect annotation of Confucianism is a significant part of Korean plays’ successes. We could feel the righteousness, politeness, kindness and humanness from a Korean play, which proposes that we Chinese must respect our own culture. That is what our forefathers left over, and we have the responsibility to inherit it.
3.3the good examples and goals for college students
As we all know, a star or idol’s emergence means much sweat and tears. According to an incomplete statistics, every star in Korea would be a trainer for average four years. During the training period, the trainers have to exercise more than 10 hours per day without any vacation only if something unexpected happens. The only thing for these trainers is exercising and waiting. No one knows whether he I
could debut. That is crucial. Due to their many-years hard practice, they have the ability to win among the numerous icons, which is worth following. We could know “no pain, no gain”.
Besides, in recent years, a new form for supporting idols has gradually been developed. That is, in the name of idols, fans collect money or living goods or school supplies to the needy students or poor areas. It is obvious that it is much better than sending presents to idols directly. These public interests activities not only benefit the society, teach teenagers helping others, but also bring the good reputation to the idols, which were more and more popular. And that is the situation we would like to see. In these aspects, the stars are setting great examples and profound goals for our college students.
3.4the developments of innovative thinking and independence
Through media and internet, we come into contact with more and more young-generation Korean icons, such as EXO, a great icon group full of the generation after 90s. As the similar age, we could find something in common. This is an open time, and we would rather select those energetic and vigorous culture. We are willing to grow up with the new culture. We develop a new view and we would be faced with the world with a new spiritual outlook. The wide prevalence of “Korean Wave” around Chinese college students shows that our students are eager for the simple relaxation and happiness. Live an independent life, dance to music. The variety of entertaining activities endows our college students positive and natural life style, and put down the annoyance in the entertainment. “Korean Wave” contributes to strengthening personality liberation and democratization, and gives college students positive subject consciousness, which makes us present rational sense with the characteristics of age. Respecting one’s own selection is conducive to expressing contemporary college students’ creation and independence.
4. The Negative Affects to Chinese College Students
4.1the indulgence of it regardless of the real life
Since the two camps, idols and fans, came into effect, the crazy love for idols of I
fans has never disappeared. Some crazy fans could do what they could to follow their idols, waiting for them at the company gate, running after the idols’ cars, following all the schedules regardless of their due work, classes, which has been breaking the normal daily routine, hurting the families and also influencing the idols’ lives. What they did not only frustrates their own lives, but also leads to many bad judgments for the fans and idols among personages of all circles. A young female teacher who is from Taiwan once attended a Korean television show, which aroused a strong controversy. She was a huge Shinee fan, (Shinee is a famous icon group of SM Entertainment of Korea), and in order to follow Shinee, she would go to Korea at least three times per month, which means she had to give up some classes and her students. No doubt that dismissal was her end. She is still indulgencing in Shinee ignoring any persuasion, unmarried.
4.2the huge costs of following “K-Pop” stars
Rumor has it that following idols steps means to set foot in a money-made road, not only the further journey, tickets or albums, but also the expenses of an array of merchandise, perhaps from toothbrushes, bags and pens to underpants or T- shirts, everything you could image. Just as the teacher mentioned above, she spent most of her salary on purchasing Shinee’s album, concert tickets and the products referring to Shinee in spite of no new clothes, haircut, no rich foods, surely no save and no friends. Despite everyone criticized her life, she had never changed. Anything we did should be depended on own ability, let alone following stars. Do not make yourself a tragedy.
4.3the frequent arguments between “K-Pop” followers and opponants
Where there is crowd, there is fight. The circle of fans, anti-fans, idols and passers-by is filled with all kinds of totally different ideas about following “K-Pop” stars. It is not difficult for us to see that the arguments among the several camps will never be disappeared, which would more or less affect some outsiders of these camps, and make some bad influences to the society. Many fans love an idol and love his everything, which easily make the teenagers imitate the bad manners, even breach laws. And what the anti-fans did has never been less than the real fans. Their I
goals are doing everything that they could to insult, hurt, and damage the stars they do not like, which is so crazy. The most-frequent-used ways are criticizing or insulting the stars on websites and pretending the fans to send something toxic or scared to threaten the stars. Whatever the fans or anti-fans did both breed discontent of so-called passers-by.
On one hand, they criticize the anti-fans, hurting others, breaching laws, ignoring families and their friends. On the other hand, they call the “K-Pop” fans idol-overdosed, losing their heads, lacking sensibility. It is said that idols pay for the fans’ behaviors. The extreme behaviors fans or anti-fans did both influence the impression of idols in the eyes of passers-by or others, which hugely widens the ideas among them.
Because of these furious ideas, arguments increase day by day. Every camp can not persuade others or been persuaded. The fights among them would be ever-lasting, and the “K-Pop” effects have still strongly existed in China.
5. The Countermeasures to Those Influences
5.1the rejection of dross and the selection of the essential
There are both positive and negative aspects of “K-Pop” influences for our college students, thus we have to select and follow the good effects and reject the bad ones. The “Korean Wave” makes us more fashionable, more innovative and more independent, which need us to keep and develop them. Faced with the negative aspects, we would try our best to avoid them. Those are we college students have to do. As well, with the rising of “Korean Wave”, China has to adjust its structure of culture industry. The reason why “K-Pop” becomes prevalent around China mainland, besides its own charm, is that China is lacking in such culture style. In order to capture worldwide developing trend, China must make prompt adjustments. Otherwise, there is only “K-Pop”, no “C-Pop”.
5.2the improvements of students’ abilities to tell and appreciate “Korean Wave”
As a college, it is necessary to implement some activities to make students I
closer to Korean culture. It could bring some boutique Korean culture into class with selection and by purpose, so as to guide students into a right way of following “K-Pop” stars. “Korean Wave” is full of many commercial elements, which easily make receivers lost in its commercial impact. Thinks to college students’ high capacity and willing of receiving foreign culture, college should select some refined foreign culture for students.
6. Conclusion
This writing mainly analyses the influence of “K-Pop” on Chinese college students, including the positive influences, in the performances of the enrichments of knowledge an lives, the attention back to Confucianism, the good examples and goals and the developments of innovation and independence. It also has the negative influences, the crazy indulgence, the huge costs and the frequent arguments. As well, faced with these influences, how people deal with them. As far as I am concerned, three measures could be adapted: the rejection of the dross and the selection of the essential for college students, the adjustments of culture industry construction for nation, the improvements of student’s abilities to tell and appreciate “Korean Wave” for college.
