Step 1 Greeting and Lead-in
Good morning, everyone, today we will study the “Reading and Vocabulary”
of the page 22,
Firstly, Let us perform a role play
Now, we need two students, Student A act the reporter from one of the newspapers.
Student B play the part of the interviewee.
Now, you, the reportor, are working on a special report about disasters, you need to
interview some people.
You , the reporter, can ask the interviewee Questions, like these:
1 Have you ever experienced (a flood, a tornado a thunderstorm, a hurricane)?
2 Do you know anyone who has experienced one of the events?
3 Have you ever read a news story about one of the events? Can you describe it?
4 Do you know anything about the events? For example, what causes them?
Step 2 Read the Gulf Stream on page 22 and check the meaning of the words.

Now, time is up, let‟s answer the questions. Let‟s do it together.
The first one: What is a current?

Current refers to A movement of water in a river, lake, or ocean
The second one: What kind of things flow?

A is the right answer.
Flow refers to the steady and continuous movement of sth in one direction.
The third one: If two places are on the same latitude, they are on the same line____?
A. east/west B. north/south
B is the right answer.
Latitude refers to the distance of a place north or south of the equator (=the line
around the world dividing north and south)
Step 3 Fast-reading
Read the passage quickly, (the passage of What is a Tornado?/ What is a Hurricane?/ and
An Extraordinary Event on page 23), then finish the exercise at Activity 2, page 22.
Now, time is up, let us check the answers.
The first one: How strong are tornado winds?
1. More than 400 Km/h. (the second sentence of the first paragraph)
The second one: What can happen to furniture when a house is destroyed by a tornado?
2. It stays where it was. (the last sentence of the second paragraph)
(They can destroy houses, but leave the furniture inside exactly where it was)
The third one: How many tornadoes are there in the US every day?
3.About 800. (the first sentence of the third paragraph of the first passage)
The fourth one: How many people died in the worst tornado of all time?
4. More than 700.(the last sentence of the first passage What is a Tornado?)
The fifth one: What happens at sea during a hurricane?

8. His coffin was dropped in the sea by a hurricane and carried to Canada by
the Gulf Stream.
Step 4 Detailed-reading (True or False)
Now, read these three passages again, and answer questions one by one.
Ok, the time is here, now we look at the following questions, True or False?
the first one, ,,,,is It True or False?
1. All tornadoes have winds of more than 400 kilometres per hour.
It‟s False, The most violent tornadoes, not all .
2. There are more tornadoes occurring in the US than in other parts of the world.
It‟s True, (Almost all of them occur in the US, the third sentence of the first
paragraph)
3. In the US, there are usually about 80 people killed in tornadoes every year.
It‟s False, there are 800,not 80.
4. The worst tornado in history killed at least 700 people
It‟s True, more than 700 people had been killed.
5. Every year there are six Atlantic hurricanes.
It‟s True, there are on average 6 Atlantic hurricanes each years.

Now, let us look at the first passage, and we will explain the language points.
Ok ,look at this sentence……on the second paragraph, the first sentence.
1. Tonadoes can pick up cars, trains and even houses and put them down in the next
street
Pay attention to the phrase “pick up”:
here the meaning is “take hold of sth and lift it up” (拾起,捡起) Look at the example:
The monkey picked up a stone.
The second meaning: To go somewhere in your car and collect sb who is waiting for you
(用车接,搭人或带货) Wait at the gate after school and I‟ll pick you up.
(others: get the information or skill by chance//receive the signal, sound or picture)
Ok ,look at the last sentence……the first paragraph.
2. Almost all of them occur in the US, in the area from Texas in the southeast to South
Dakota in the north.
occur: it means “to happen”-------- He told me how the accident occurred.
occur to (sb): ( of an idea or a thought ) to come into your mind
--------An excellent idea occurred to me when I woke up this morning.
----------It occurred to me that I would travel to Europe.
Now, look at the first sentence…… of the third paragraph.
3. On average, there are 800 tornadoes in the US each year, causing about 80 deaths
and 1,500 injuries.
on average: calculated by adding several amounts together, finding a total, and
dividing the total by the number of amounts.
------- The price of the apple is ten yuan per kg on average.
Causing…here is the adverbial clause of result, it means the two actions have the necessary casual relationships, it‟s usually put at the end of the sentence.
------Football is played in more than 80 countries, making it the most popular
game in the world.
Now, look at the last sentence…… of the second paragraph.
4. The cemetery where Coghlan was buried was destroyed by the hurricane and Coghlan‟s coffin ended up in the sea.
end up with : finish with something
begin with : used to introduce the first point you want to make
start with : begin doing sth -
--------Without your help, the experiment will end up with failure.
OK, look at the second sentence…… of the third paragraph.
5. The Gulf Stream had carried it 3000 kilometres up the eastern US coast to Prince
Edward Island.
Up to a place : it refers to towards or in a higher position //to a place in the north ofacountry ,,,if the direction is the opposite, „down” is used.
Step 6 Summary and Homework
In this lesson, we have learned much information and vocabulary about tornado.
