The Reservedness of British People
Reservedness is well-known as a characteristic of the British people.A reserved person is one who does not like to express his ideas openlyor take the initiative in talking, and does not show much emotion, and seldom gets excited.
British people have formed their own unique way of thinking andbehavior because of geography, history, culture and other reasons.
Firstly, geography is one of the most importantreasons. Britain is an island country , and it ’s separated from the European continent by the English Chanel to the south and the North Sea to the east. The English Chanel cut Britain ’s connection off to the outside world. From this,we can see that the geographical environment of Britain is relatively closed. So the people live in this island are more individual and more reserved.
Secondly, The historical environment has a great influence on the formation of people’s character.Britain’s unique history has created the unique character of the British people. Britain is a veteran capitalist country; the British Parliament is the oldest parliament in Europe; Britain is the first one to complete the industrial revolution in the world and once was the sun-never-setting empire. With the Glorious history, British people are naturally very proud of itsnation. As the saying goes: Silence is a kind of confidence.Their reservation shows exactly the proud and confidence in their mind.
Thirdly , culture also has a significant impact on people. As early as the late seventeenth century, the British began to implement the “gentlemaneducation”. They pay a lot of attention totheir ceremony and etiquette. In some part, being reserved shows their respect to other people, and also shows a gentleman's manner.
All in all, Britain gives characteristic to the British people.
