Text 10
Dr Seuss was born on March 2, 1904 in the US. He was famous because of the books he wrote for children.
When Dr Seuss was a young man, he worked for an oil company, writing ads. This began his love for writing and drawing. In 1937, while on a trip, he was inspired to write his first book: To Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. He used the name Dr Seuss, because he wanted to use his real name for more serious books. Seuss was his middle name, and he put Dr in front of it because his father always wanted him to be a doctor.
In 1954, Dr Seuss read an article that said children were having trouble learning how to read in schools across the country. Dr Seuss decided to try to write a book for beginner readers. He took a list of 250 words that schools were teaching kids, and put all of them into one book called The Cat in the Hat. With less than 225 words, the book was a success.
In 1960, a friend of Dr Seuss’ bet him $50 that he couldn’t write a book using only 50 words. Dr Seuss won the bet by writing Green Eggs and Ham. He never did get his 50 dollars, but he created a fun book for children.
In total, Dr Seuss wrote 44 children’s books and also drew the pictures in the books. He won a Pulitzer Prize and three Academy Awards. At the age of 87, he passed away. However, his books are still enjoyed by children as well as adults. 第4期A版测试题参考答案

书面表达(One possible version)
At present, more and more languages in the world are disappearing quickly, causing a great concern. Recently, our class have had a discussion about whether to protect them. Our opinions are summarized as follows.
The majority of our classmates (65%) support the idea. A language not only passes on the local knowledge and culture in a certain area, but also holds the wisdom of a civilization. Therefore, they feel it is high time that we should protect those endangered languages. However, some classmates (35%) have a totally different opinion. They think that the disappearing of a language means that this language has no value. Protecting it means a waste of money and time.
In my opinion, whether the languages are endangered or widely used, they are all living treasures. All languages are a part of our culture just as spring doesn’t have just a single flower but rather a wide variety of colorful flowers.
