Most people can think of a sport they would love to see in the Olympics. But they often don’t
realize how hard it is to add a sport to the Olympics .A sport needs to be well-organized and
popular before the Interracial Olympic Committee (IOC) will consider it. An international
federation must govern(控制)the sport by making rules and making sure athletes meet Olympic
standards (标准). What’s more ,men from at least 75 countries and women from at least 40 must
play the sport.
However ,even meeting those conditions isn’t enough. The IOC always tries to keep the
member of athletes at about 10,000 for each Olympics .Since most modern Olympics already
include so many athletes ,introducing a new sport often means cutting other events .
The country that hosts the games is allowed to suggest what new sports should be included.
While new sports are added to the Olympics ,most of them will simply become events in another
sports meeting. In Beijing, open water swimming will become part of swimming, while women’s
steeplechase (障碍赛)will be added to athletics.

My family loves television. My earliest memories are of watching TV with my family. I think
we had five or six television sets at home — the bedrooms, the kitchen, everywhere! At least one
television was on all of the time.
When I went to university, I lived in a dormitory in my first
year. Of course I had a TV, so I continued watching my favorite
programs. But several weeks later, I realized I had a problem. My
courses were hard — much harder than high school, and there was
a lot of homework. Also, I felt stressed in my new environment. I
started watching more TV to help me have less pressure. Guess
what? Soon I was spending more time watching TV than I was on
homework. So I didn’t have a lot of friends. At the end of my first year, my grades weren’t very good, and I was really disappointed in myself. At home that summer, I watched television with my
family a lot. At first I thought it was great. But then I noticed something. We talked all the time,
but always about TV. Something was missing. Television brought us together, but in a way it also kept us away.
When I got back to university, I made a decision to do better. I walked into my dormitory, it became extremely clear: my old friend television was really my enemy (敌人)! It had kept me from getting good grades, and from making friends. I had to stop watching TV. So I did. I gave away my television, and I’ve never looked back. I started doing bett er in school, made more friends, started having more energy. I don’t know if I’ll continue to have a TV-free life. But if I do watch television again, it won’t be like before. “Pictogram” is a compound word made from “picture” and “telegram”. Pictograms are us ually simple pictures, and they are often made with letters and words. A pictogram is a symbol which represents an idea or an object through an image (图像). Also, it is a kind of communication system which must be learned but is very useful in our lives. The user must learn to see, understand and remember the different pictogram symbols. There are about 1,400 different symbols at the present time.
A Canadian named Subhas Maharaj came up with the idea for pictograms in the beginning of the 1980s. At first, pictograms were introduced to help people who had disabilities in speaking, reading, or writing. Pictograms are images of objects that are easy to see and create. Today, pictograms are used in many different ways. For example, there are traffic, recycling and restaurant signs, even animal symbols and so on.
Pictograms are usually in white against a black background. The combination of white against a
black background creates extremely contrast (对比), and this makes

People love proverbs. They are always impressed because the proverbs express a lot of information in just a few words. A good proverb quickly sums up(概括) ideas that are sometimes hard to express. And the person can understand it at once.
Proverbs come from two main places---ordinary people and famous people. These two sources(来源) are not always distinct(明显的). Common and popular proverbs are often used by famous people. And the common people often borrow something that is said or written down by a well-known person. For example, "Bad news travels fast" probably comes from the experience of housewives. However, "All's well that ends well " was written by the famous writer---William Shakespeare.
Proverbs are used everywhere in the world. If you can understand a culture's proverbs, you

When we think of heroes, we often think of strong, brave people. But anyone can be a hero. A hero is someone who helps another person in the face of difficulties or in danger. Fred Hollows was such a person.
Fred Hollows was born in New Zealand and became an eye doctor. He believed that all people, rich and poor, should have good medical treatment. After he began working as an eye doctor in Australia, he learned that many Aboriginal(土著的) Australians had eye disease because of dirty environment and bad health. The cost of this surgery was only twenty-five dollars. But that is a lot of money to a poor person in Africa. There were also no doctors to help.
Fred Hollows wanted to help the people in Africa. But he couldn't go to Africa because he had
become sick. So he started the Fred Hollows Foundation. This foundation collected donations from people in rich countries. This money provided equipment for eye surgeries and helped to train doctors. The foundation helped thousands of people to see again.
