For example, if a student wonders what teaching is like, he or she can choose to work in an elementary school classroom a few afternoons there are many benefits, opponents (反对者) problems with the new requirement. First, they the main reason students go to school is to learn core subjects and skills. Because service learning is time-consuming, students spend time studying the core subjects. Second, they believe that forcing students to work goes against the law. By requiring service, the school takes away an individual's freedom to choose.
In my view, service learning is a great way to to the community, learn new skills, and explore different careers. , I don' t believe you should force people to help others – the to help must come from the heart. I think the one that gives students choices: a student should be able to choose sixty hours of independent study or sixty hours of service. Choice encourages both freedom and responsibility, and as young adults, we must learn to handle both wisely.

Have you ever noticed the colour of the water in a river or stream after a heavy rainfall? What do you think caused this change in colour? It is soil that has been washed into the river from the riverbank or from t}le nearby fields.
Components of Soft
Soil is made up of a number of layers(层),each having its own distinctive colour and texture. The upper layer is known as the litter. It acts like a blanket.limiting temperature changes and reducing water loss. The topsoil layer is made up of small particles of rock mixed with rotten plant and animal matter called humus(腐殖质),which is black and gives the topsoil its dark colour. This layer is usually rich in nutrients, oxygen, and water.Below the topsoil is the subsoil,a layer that contains more stones mixed with only small amounts of organic matter. This layer is lighter in colour because of the lack of humus.Beneath the soil lies a layer of bedrock.
Soil forms from the bottom up.Over time bedrock is attacked by rain, wind, frost, and snow.It is gradually broken down into smaller particles in a process called weathering.Plants begin to grow, and rotten materials
enrich the topsoil. Most of the soil in Eastern Canada.for example. Was formed from weathered rock that was exposed when the ice disappeared l2.000 years ag0.
Water Beneath the Soil
Surface water collects and flows above the ground in lakes.ponds.and rivers.Once in the soil or rock,it is called groundwater.Gravity pulls groundwater through the soil in a process called percolation(渗透).Eventually the water reaches a layer called the water table.Under this is bedrock through which water cannot percolate.
As water percolates downward,it dissolves organic matter and minerals from the soil and carries them to deeper layers. This causes a serious problem because plants require these nutrients for growth.
Soil pH
Soil can be acidic.neutral.or basic. The pH of the soil is determined by the nature of the rock
from which it was formed.and by the nature of t}le plants that grow and rot in it.
The acidity of rain and snow can lower the pH of the groundwater that enters the soil.By burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gasoline, humans have been contributing to higher levels of acidity in many soils. When fossil fuels are burned.gases are released into the air and then fall back to earth as acid rain.Acid soil increases出e problem of
carrying nutrients to lower soil levels. As nutrients are removed, soil is less fertile.Plants grow more slowly in acidic soil, and also become easily attacked by diseases.

When women sit together to watch a movie on TV, they usually talk simultaneously(同时的)about a variety of subjects, including children, men, careers and what' s happening in their lives. When groups of men and women watch a movie together, the men usually end up telling the women to shut up. Men can either talk or watch the screen -- they can' t do both -- and they don' t understand that women can. Besides, women consider that the point of all getting together is to have a good time and develop relationships -- not just to sit there like couch potatoes staring at the screen.
During the ad breaks, a man often asks a woman to explain the plot and tell him where the relationship between the characters is going. He is unable, unlike women, to read the subtle body language signals that reveal how the characters are feeling emotionally. Since women
originally spent their days with the other women and children in the group, they developed the ability to communicate successfully in order to maintain relationships. For a woman, speech continues to have such a clear purpose: to build relationships and make friends. For men, to talk is to relate the facts.
Men see the telephone as a communication tool for sending facts and information to other people, but a woman sees it as a means of bonding. A woman can spend two weeks on vacation with her girlfriend and, when she returns home, telephone the same girlfriend and talk for another two hours.
There is no convincing evidence that social conditioning, the fact that girls' mothers talked them more, is the reason why girls talk more than boys. Psychiatrist Dr Michael Lewis, author Social Behaviour and Language Acquisition, conducted experiments that found mothers talked to and looked at, baby girls more often than baby boys. Scientific evidence shows parents res the brain bias of their children. Since a girl' s brain is better organized to send and receive speech ,
we therefore talk to them more. Consequently, mothers who try to talk to their sons are usually pointed to receive only short grunts in reply.
44.While watching TV with others, women Usually talk a lot because they
A. are afraid of awkward silence with their families and friends
B. can both talk and watch the screen at the Same time
C. think they can have a good time and develop relationships
D. have to explain the plot and body language to their husbands
45. After a vacation with her girlfriend, a woman would talk to her again on the phone for hours in order to A. experience the happy time again B. keep a close tie with her
C. recommend her a new scenic spot D. remind her of something forgotten
46. What does the author want to tell us most?
A. Women' s brains are better organized for language and communication
B. Women love to talk because they are more sociable than men.
C. Men do not like talking because they rely more on facts.
D. Social conditioning is not the reason why women love talking.
47. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Women Are Socially Trained to Talk B. Talking Maintains Relationships

The man traveling in the back of the ambulance which thrust its way
through the streets of Baltimore that morning in 1967 had no business to be alive. By everything that was reasonable, and there were plenty of wasn‘t. As the people in the hospital pointed out after they had examined him, he was only slightly bruised. Yet he has just fallen 150 feet down a hotel lift shaft!
Unknown to the man, two things had occurred which were to affect his life that day. On the thirteenth floor of the hotel, somebody had carelessly left the lift gate open. Down in the basement, a pipe had burst and, before anyone could check the rush of water, it had flooded the bottom of the lift shaft to a depth of two feet.
Modern lifts have all sorts of fail-safe mechanisms to prevent accidents, but this was an ancient contraption(奇妙的装置)— unreliable, creaking, slow, hazardous(dangerous), and suitable material for any scrap dealer who cared to take it away.
The man had plenty of things to occupy his mind that morning. He had overslept. The hotel had forgotten to call him and now he was late for an important business appointment. He dressed quickly, shaved hurriedly, grabbed his briefcase and hurried off down the hotel corridor.
Good! The lift gate was open. The lift must be there. He need not press the button and wait while the large, clumsy(badly-made)lift hauled its way upwards. Without looking or thinking he stepped out into space The
lift cage was, in fact, one floor above him on the fourteenth. The world into which he had walked was a narrow space of not very fresh air, ending 150 feet below in two feet of dirty water.
The man descended(dropped), making his journey to the ground at a speed he had never dreamed of. Confused patterns, whirling shapes, a rush of air, time enough to be afraid, split-second thoughts of death, then — crash.
Perhaps this gave him the record for some sort of high-diving act. No doubt in future he always looked before he leap. Certainly he learnt that this was no way to save time. The experts said that those two feet of water had saved his life.
48.How do we know that the story is true?
A. We are told the place and time. B. We are given plenty of details.
C. Lifts often go wrong. D. The man won a high-diving record.
49.By ‗had no business to be alive‘ the writer means that the man ____.
A. had missed his business appointment. B. was only just alive.
C. had done very little business. D. was alive and this was very surprising.
50.The word ―precedents‖ in paragraph 1 refers to ____.
A. other people who had had similar accidents. B. rulers of
countries.

第一节: 任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题l分,满分l0分) 请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。注意:每个空格只填1个单词。
Communication Principles
How you see yourself can make a great difference in how you communicate.―Every individual exists in a continually changing world of experience of which he(or she)is the center‖.Many communication scholars and social scientists believe that people are products of how others treat them and of the messages others send them. But every day we experience the centrality of our selves in communication.A student.for instance, may describe a conflict with a teacher as unfair treatment:―I know my teacher doesn‘t like the fact that I don‘t agree with his opinions.and that‘s why he gave me such a poor grade in that class.‖The teacher might say the opposite. Each person may believe that he is correct and that the other person‘s view is wrong.
The concept of serf originates in communication.Through verbal
and nonverbal symbols, a child learns to accept roles in response to the expectations of others. You establish self-image。The sort of person you believe you are,by how others think of you.Positive, negative, and neutral messages that you receive from others all play a role in determining who you are.Communication itself is probably best understood as a dialogue process. Our understanding of communication comes from our interactions with other people. In a more obvious way.communication involves others in the sense that a competent communicator considers what the other person needs and expects when selecting messages to share. So,the communication begins with the self,as defined largely by others, and involves others,as defined largely by the self.
Communication Occurs almost every minute of your life.If you are not communicating with yourself(thinking, planning, reacting to the world around you),you are observing others and drawing inferences from their behavior.Even if the other person did not intend a message for you.you gather observations and draw specific conclusions.A person yawns and you believe that person is bored with your message.A second person looks away from you and you conclude that person is not listening to you.A third person smiles(perhaps because of a memory of a joke he heard recently) and you believe that he is attracted to you.We are continually picking up meanings from others‘ behaviors and we are
constantly providing behaviors that have communicative value for them.
More often than not,you may have hurt someone accidentally and you may have tried to explain that you did not mean that. You may have told the other person that you were sorry for your statement. You may have made a joke out of your rude statement.Nonetheless, your comment remains both in the mind of the other person and in your own mind. You cannot go back in time and erase your messages to others.Communication cannot be reversed(倒退),nor can it be repeated. When you tried to re—create the atmosphere, the conversation, and the setting, nothing seemed right.Your second experience with a similar setting and person made far different results.
