What flowers are to gardens, spices to food, gems to a garment and stars to heaven, such are proverbs interwoven in speech .
Any port in a storm.
A small leak will sink a great ship.
A smooth sea never makes a skillful mariner.
Being on sea, sail; being on land, settle.
Between the devil and the deep sea.
He is a wolf in sheep’s clothing.
Hoist your sail when the wind is fair.
In a calm sea, every man is a pilot.
Let another’s shipwreck be your navigation mark.
Salt water and absence wash away love.
Separate the sheep from the goats.
A man of straw is worth a woman of gold.
Man, woman and devil are the three degrees of comparison.
Kings have many ears and many eyes.
Kings have no mistakes.
Marry your son when you will, your daughter when you can.
Don’t quarrel with your bread and butter.
Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we may die.
Everyone for himself and let the devil take the hindmost.
If the beard were all, a goat might preach.
All are not saints that go to church.
Better to reign in hell, than serve in heaven.
Christmas comes but once a year. But when it comes it brings good cheer.
God’s mill grinds slow but sure.
Like priest, like people.
Man proposes, God disposes.
A kiss of death.
As poor as Job.
A soft answer turns away wrath.
Conquer the desire, or they will conquer you.
Do as you would be done by.
Spare the rod and spoil the child.
A live dog is better than a dead lion.
A good dog deserves a good bone.
Every dog has his day.
Help a lame dog over a stile.
A dumb dog
谚语:“When the Ethiopian is white, the English will love the French.” 但是,这里的“Ethiopian”是个典故,源自圣经的《旧约·耶利米书》中的第13章第23节:“Can the Ethiopian change his skin, or the leopard his spots?”
