If seems that the Englishmen just cannot live without sports of some kind. A famous French humorist once said that this is because the English insist on behaving like children all their lives. Wherever you go in this country, you will see both children and grown-ups knocking a ball about with a stick or something, as if in Britain men shall always remain boys and women girls! Still, it can never be bad to get exercise, can it?
Taking all amateur(业余)and professional sports in Britain into consideration, there can be no doubt that football is at the top of the list. It is called soccer in the United States. The game originated(起源于)in Britain and was played in the Middle Ages or even earlier, though as an organized game, or “association football”, it dates only from the beginning of the 19th century.
The next is rugby, which is called “football”in the United States. It is a kind of football played by two teams of fifteen players than eleven. In rugby, an oval-shaped ball is used which can be handled as well as kicked. It is a pretty rough game.
In summer, cricket is the most popular sport. In fact, it has sometimes been called the English national game. Most foreigners find the game rather slow or even boring, but it enjoys great popularity among the British.
Tennis rates high on the list, too. It was introduced into England from France in the 15th century, but it was from England that it spread to practically every country in the world.
Table tennis, or“ping-pong”, surely is not played on a great scale as it is in China or Japan. Basketball and volleyball were introduced into Britain during the late 19th century from America and are gaining popularity. Horse-back riding, swimming, rowing and golf all attract a lot of people.

The money for the space program of the United States has been questioned by some people. There the moon could have been better and more cheaply done by robots. Their arguments may have some value. It is true, however, that never in history was mankind so united or so focused on one event as when Neil A. Armstrong climbed down a ladder from the Apollo and stepped onto the moon. The effect of feelings of this event is something to be considered when we look at the space program. President Nixon spoke these words to the astronauts, “… all the people on this earth are truly one — one in the pride in what you have done ….” “We came in peace of all mankind.” These words give noble ideas that we on earth must try to achieve in our daily lives. Perhaps the writer Archibald Macleish made the best comment as to what the moon flight — Apollo might mean for all mankind. He wrote that to see the earth as it truly is, small and beautiful, to see ourselves as brothers, brothers who know they are truly brothers.
69. The writer believes that _____.
A. the space program is worthless
B. President Nixon made the best comment about the Apollo
C. The effect of feelings of the event of the moon landing is important in judging its cost

Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it’s painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone
has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of the day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as “Get up, John! You’ll be late for work again !” The possible explanation to the trouble is that John is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when
husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (哈欠)and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy or concentration for your shaper hours.
72. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ______.
A.he is a lazy person
B.he refuses to follow his own energy cycle
C.he is not sure when his energy is low
D.he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening
73. Which of the following may lead to family quarrels according to the
passage?
A.Unwariness of energy cycles.
B.Familiar monologues.
C.A change in a family member’s energy cycle.
D.Attempts to control the energy cycle of other family members.
74. If one wants to work more efficiently at his low point in the morning, he should ________.
A.change his energy cycle B.overcome his laziness
C.get up earlier than usual D.go to bed earlier
75. You are advised to rise with a yawn and stretch because it will ______.
A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work
B. help you to control your temper early in the day
C. enable you to concentrate on your routine work
D. keep your energy cycle under control all day

作文参考答案:
Dear Bill,
Very glad to receive your letter of July 13. Thank you for your congratulations. I was very excited when I heard that Beijing won the bid for the 2008 Olympic Games. Immediately I called Wei Guo and Li Hong to my house. We decided to put up a wall newspaper for our class. We hurried to our classroom and began to work. Wei Guo and Li Hong copied some news from the newspapers. I drew an Olympic flag. The next morning our classmates were both surprised and overjoyed when they saw the wall newspaper.
I hope you can come to China to watch the Olympic Games in 2008.
Sincerely yours.
