Augustus is the first emperor of Rome and grand-nephew of Julius Caser. He defeated Mark Antony and Cleopatra in 31 and subsequently gained control over the empire. In 35, he was named emperor and given the honorary title Augustus. He is a person who I admire most. At first I was absorbed in his handsome appearance. But when I study further, I think he is a great man, emperor, a real politician.
Augustus has different names in different period. In 63-44BC, his name was Octavius. Then in 44-27BC, his name was Octivan. After 27BC, we called him Augustus. Augustus was born at 23 September 63BC in Rome. His mother was Julius Caser’s niece. Caser, the rule of the Rome, liked him very much so that adopted him and pointed him as a inheritor. Then he began to create his legend.
After Caser ’s death, Octavian began his political career and he was just 18 years old at that time. At 43BC, he formed the “second triumvirate” with Antony and Lepidus.At42BC, he defeated the republican leaders and at 36BC, he ruled the western Roman. At 32BC, he fought against Antony and Egypt Queen. He took advantage of Antony’s shortages, which he was addicted to the love of Egypt Queen. Finally Octavian beaten them at 31BC. He got the power and become the only ruler of Roman Empire eventually. Though he got this power by using violence, His rule was merciful. He was much clever to return the republic so that he can avoid conflicts, but it was just in oral words, the essence was the empire. He reconstituted the senate and claimed that he resigned some political duties. It seemed that he did not have any power, but he did control some cities which have the strongest military power.
So speaking only for myself, he is a real politician. His conciliatory policies healed the profound wounds brought by the Roman Civil war and played an important role in history. He is the best modal in the history as a monarch. He carried out reforms in the troops, strengthened the system of professional army and mercenary, established praetorian guard and founded the first standing army in Rome. Because of his wise leadership, he conquered Spain in 19BC, pushed his army to the Rhine and Danube and so on. He took advantage of his intelligence sizing up the situation to create a enormous empire.
He also reformed the Roman tax structure and financial system so that made the Roman economics become more and more prosperous. Then he used these money to give the army preferential treatment, decorate the capital, build a lot of infrastructure and other services to amuse people. He also built many temples, new Curia, some theater. And the most important was that he built a network of roads. It was helpful to develop Roman trade and extended Roman empire ’s influence in the world.
Under his leadership, the Roman culture had a prosperous period. He received many different kinds of thoughts, paid attention to the cultural construction and let scholars serve his own cultural policy. Such as Rome the greatest writer of Vigil, Martin Hollis and Levi were appeared in this period. He also protected these knowledgeable people, helped and encouraged them to create their own works. It was a golden age of Roman literature. The Roman Empire is the most famous ancient empire because Rome is the birthplace of ancient civilization and the ancient world various nationalities (Egypt, Babylon, jewish, and Greek, etc.) of the ideological and cultural
achievements input Western Europe's main duct. It was no doubt that Augustus played an important role in this achievement.
The above mentioned, it was about his whole life and his career. In my opinion, he is a great emperor who try to make his country become more and more stronger. Maybe you will think he get the throne by means of war. He is cruel. But as we know, on one can get the power by a peace way in history. If you want to get power, you must become cruel. For example LiShimin in Tang dynasty, he killed his brothers and forced his father to give up the throne. But it did not influence his reputation in our history. So the same as Augustus, his deeds outweigh his faults.
Augustus is a person who I admire most not only because how smart he was, but also he understand to consider his nation ’s future. He completed the reunification, ended the chaos, opened a new chapter and laid a solid foundation in the development of the Roman Empire. He took supreme power as emperor with the title of Augustus and took measures to run his country and gave a good example to his inheritors. So two centuries later, the Roman Empire reached its greatest extent, encircling the Mediterranean, reaching Scotland in north and spreading into Armenia and Mesopotamia in the east. The emperors relied on a strong army and an efficient bureaucracy to exert their rule, which was facilitated by a well-developed system of roads. Thus the Roman enjoyed a long period of peace lasting two hundred years, a remarkable phenomenon in history know as the “Pax Romana”. Of course, Augustus’ contributions can not go unnoticed.
