Text 1M:Hello, ma’am. Why are you parked on the side of the freeway? W:I thought something was wrong with my car, officer. But now it’s OK. I’ll move it right away. Text 2W:Daddy, how big is the universe? M:I don’t know, honey. It’s bigger than anyone knows. I think it’s bigger than anyone could imagine, too. Text 3M:Wow! You almost scared me to death! What’s on your face? W:Mostly yogurt with some honey mixed in. It’s good for your skin. Text 4M:Can I walk your dog? W:Well, sometimes he gets too playful. He wouldn’t make you bleed, but it could hurt. I’m trying to train him not to bite. M:That’s OK. I’ll take my chances. He looks friendly to me. Text 5W:Look! Look what’s on the ground! M:Oh, those are some pretty big balls of ice! No wonder the storm was so loud last night. Luckily, nothing got damaged out there. That ice could kill a small animal! Text 6W:Hi, Danny! How was school today? M:Fine! But I have some homework to do! W:Well, what is it? Maybe I can help you with it. M:It’s called free writing, and I have to do it myself. We have a long essay to write next week. Before we start it, our teacher wants us to sit down for an hour and write whatever comes into our thoughts about the topic. We don’t have to be careful about making everything perfect. We just have to write our thoughts down quickly and without stopping. Text 7M:Let’s go shopping this weekend. We need to buy more supplies before the first storm. W:What’s the big deal? We already have a cupboard full of canned and dry food. I think that should last us a month! Plus, we can still go to the market in the downtown once in a while. It isn’t hard to go there, now that we have our car. It carries everything for us. M:I know, but this winter might be a terrible one. It seems that the past few winters have been mild, so everyone is predicting very bad weather this year. If we get as much snow as they’re predicting, we could be stuck at home for weeks at a time! Even our car won’t be able to get through several feet of snow!
Text 8W:Hey, Mark. Do you ever feel like leaving this town in the future? M:I think about it all the time, Sal. You know what I’d like to do? W:Rent a car and drive until you run out of gas? M:No. That must be your dream. I want to live on an island in the middle of a sea. W:And do what? What would you do on a desert island? M:I don’t want to live by myself! I’ll find a place where interesting people live. Maybe it’ll be an island where people make their own wine. Yeah! I want to live somewhere in the sea. I’ll make wine and search for hidden treasure W:I didn’t know you had such great thoughts, Mark. M:There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Sal. I’m a small⁃town kid with big dreams Text 9M:Thanks for agreeing to this interview, Ms. Lerner. W:Of course. M:OK So I have a few questions. First, when did you know you wanted to write children’s books? W:Well, I studied creative writing in college. But after I graduated, I worked in advertising. For ten years, that was my focus. It wasn’t until I got married and had my own children that I got interested in children’s books. M:Did you write one for your kids? W:Yes, I did. My best friend put pictures in it for me. M:And did they like it? W:They loved it. A friend of my husband saw the book in our home, and he showed it to a publisher that he knew. They published it that year. The next year, I wrote three more books. Since the beginning, I have had a total of eight published. M:That’s wonderful. Thank you so much for your time. This interview will appear in my school newspaper in about three weeks. I can send you a copy if you’d like. Text 10Attention, students! We have great news for you. There will soon be a new farmers’ market opening up right here on campus! The south parking lot will be used for this event every Friday. The market will open up later than usual for a farmers’ market, because we know most of you get up late on Friday mornings! It will begin at ten and end around three. The usual fruit and vegetable stands selling food from local farms will be there. Something different about this market is that several restaurants in town will be open for lunch right in the market! There will be an area with tables and chairs, and a different local band will perform in the market each week. You might even see some of your classmates performing, because the market organizers have sent invitations to many student music groups. So, come out and join the fun! Relax on the grass with some friends after morning classes are over. The market is open to the public, of course, but students get a discount at the restaurant stands. On the market’s opening day, the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Shop will give out free desserts to the first hundred people.
