2010 New Year's Greeting from the President of Tsinghua University
As the bells welcoming 2010 start to ring, we bid farewell to an unforgettable 2009 and welcome a promising New Year. On this special occasion, I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of the University to extend New Year's greetings to Tsinghua students, members of the faculty and staff, our alumni, and those who have faithfully supported the development of Tsinghua in past years.
In 2009, the whole country celebrated the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. Tsinghua faculty members and students celebrated the National Day in various ways. More than 5,000 participated in the celebrations in Beijing's Tian'anmen area on National Day.
In the past year, we have made great progress in building Tsinghua into a world-class university.
Four members of our faculty have been elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Twelve Tsinghua faculty members have been selected for the Thousand-Talent Project launched by Chinese government, and 23 were chosen in the Ministry of Education's Cheung Kong Scholars Award Plan. The Fields Medal winner Professor Shing-tung Yau became the first director of the Tsinghua Mathematical Sciences Center.
We held discussions on our mission and strategy on talent cultivation in the next hundred years of the university. We have launched a series of programs to promote the cultivation of innovative talent, including the "Tsinghua Xuetang Plan" for undergraduate students and the "Future Scholars Plan" for graduate students. Tsinghua enrolled the highest-ranking students in science in the National College Entrance Examination in most provinces and those in the humanities and social sciences from over one-third of the provinces in China in 2009.
To meet the strategic demands of the nation and maintain our commitment to keeping our research on the cutting edge of world scientific developments, we opened the School of Life Sciences based on the Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Learning, the Institute of Education, and the Center for Earth System Science. Many high-quality papers were published in top academic journals. Tsinghua ranked first nationwide in the citations of research papers collected by SCI. In 2009, Tsinghua won 23 national science and technology prizes. One research achievement was selected for inclusion in Chinese Universities Ten Great Scientific Achievements for 2009.
For many years Tsinghua has encouraged international academic exchange, and in 2009, Tsinghua University, the University of Cambridge, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology formed a Low Carbon Energy University Alliance. The "China Computer Science 2020 Plan", led by the Turing Award winner and Tsinghua Professor Andrew Chi-Chih Yao, has attracted the participation of a number of prestigious international scholars. Over 20 percent of our undergraduate students and more than 40 percent of our graduate students participated in various overseas exchange programs last year. Moreover, Tsinghua ranks first in China in terms of the number and proportion of international students enrolled in master's degree programs. Our achievements in university development have been recognized in world academic circles.
The Tsinghua Science Park (Tuspark) celebrated its 15th anniversary this year. Since its founding, it has attracted and incubated more than 1,000 companies, and its scientific achievements have been transformed in multiple ways. Endeavors in continuing education have focused on high-quality training in poverty-stricken areas and in the western regions, and those efforts have yielded remarkable social benefits. Tsinghua graduates are also encouraged to work in the most needed areas and key industries of the nation to make their contributions to its social development.
As one of the leading universities in China, Tsinghua has continued to promote the development of its structure and system as well as of cultural innovation. We held our 16th meeting for research work to find ways to further promote our research. We have adopted new policies to support and recruit outstanding young researchers. Meanwhile, Tsinghua also enriched the culture of the university.
2010 will be a crucial year for the university. Tsinghua will celebrate its centenary in 2011. A great deal of preparatory work for the celebration is already in progress. We have officially unveiled the logo of our centenary celebration and started the construction of a number of new buildings, including the New Tsinghua Xuetang, a library for humanities and social sciences, and a museum for university history. The year for the centenary celebration will start in April 2010.
In the New Year, we will continue our efforts in our education reform, seize historical opportunities stemming from the centenary celebration, broaden our perspectives and dedicate ourselves to the goal of making Tsinghua a world-class university.
Dear teachers and students! The dawning of the New Year brings with it new horizons. Let us bear in mind the Tsinghua motto of "Self-discipline and Social Commitment", be creative and work hard to continue the development of Tsinghua University, as
well as contributing to tertiary education and scientific development in China and the world.
