【说明】1.表示凭借或依靠某种帮助,用介词 with:We may travel with the aid of a good map. 我们可以靠一张好地图去旅行。2.表示帮助某人做某事,可用aid sb to do sth(其中的to不可省略),也可用于aid sb in doing sth。比较:help sb (to) do sth 中的 to 可以省略。

【说明】1.用作形容词时,为表语形容词,不能置于名词前作定语。2.许多以 a- 开头的表语形容词(如 asleep, awake, alone 等)不能受very 修饰,但 alike 是例外,它不仅可受 much, very much的修饰,也可受 very 的修饰(类似地还有 very afraid, very ashamed 等)。

【辨析】alive, living与 live:alive 不用于名词前作定语(但可用于名词后作后置定语,如 the greatest man alive 当今伟人),主要用于人和动物;living 可用作表语或定语,可用于人或物;live 表示“活的”,主要用于动物和植物,且主要用作前置定语:live fish (tree) 活鱼(树)

【说明】其后可接名词、代词、动名词或不定式的复合结构等作宾语, 但不直接跟不定式或从句作宾语。
【辨析】permit与allow(允许):前者指上级、规则或法令等表示的准许,其语气较重;allow 指消极地不加反对,有时含有听任或默许之意,语气较轻:The nurse allowed him to remain there,though it was not permitted. 护士让他留在那儿,而按规定那是不许可的。
allowance[E5lauEns] n. 1.[C]津贴,补助:an allowance of $5000 5000美元的津贴 / overtime allowance 加班补贴 2.[C](美)零用钱(=pocket money):My weekly allowance is $50. 每周我的零花钱是50美元。
almost[5C:lmEust] adv. 几乎,差不多:I almost dropped the plate. 我差点把碟子掉了。/ We saw almost all of them. 我们差不多见到了他们的全体。/ Dinner is almost ready. 饭差不多做好了。/ Almost no one believed her. 几乎没有人相信她。/ I almost never see her. 我几乎从未见过她。
【辨析】almost与nearly:1.前者可以与 no, none, nobody, nothing, never等否定词连用,而后者不这样用。但是在否定动词之前两者均可用:They almost [nearly] didn’t catch the bus. 他们差点没赶上公共汽车。2.nearly 前可用 very, pretty, not 等词修饰,但 almost 之前不能用这些词。3.有时 almost 可表示十分相似(但又不完全相同),此时不用 nearly:I almost wish I’d stayed at home. 我真有点后悔没在家里呆着。
alone[E5lEun] adj.单独的,独自的:I want to be alone. 我想一个人呆着。/ We are not alone in thinking that he is a cheat. 不只是我们认为他是骗子。adv. 1.独自地,单独地:He lives alone. 他单独生活。/ I had to work all alone. 我得独自一人工作。2.(用于名词或代词后)只有,仅仅:He alone can do it. 这事只有他能做。/ Money alone cannot make you happy. 光是金钱不可能使你幸福。
【辨析】alone, lone与lonely:1.alone 用作形容词,表示客观上的一个人或没有外人,通常不表示寂寞或孤独等感情色彩,在句中用作表语。2.lone 表示“孤单的”、“单独的”、“无伴的”等,通常只用作定语。3.lonely 表示“寂寞的”、“孤寂的”,带有较强感情色彩,可用作表语或定语。
along[E5lCN] prep.沿着,顺着:We walked along the river. 我们沿着河往前走。/ There are trees along the river banks. 河岸上种着树。adv. 一道,向前:Come along! 来吧! / Let’s walk along. 我们往前走吧。/ He asked me to pass the note along. 他叫我把条子传过去。/ I took my camera along. 我带了照相机去。
【说明】表示“(与某人)一起”等,有时可看作是省略了(或包含有) with sb:Bring your girlfriend along, too. 把你的女朋友也一起带来。
alongside[E5lRNsaid] adv.横靠着,傍着地,并排地:We brought our boat alongside. 我们把船靠边。prep.横靠,与…并肩,在…旁边:He parked his car alongside the fence. 他把车停靠在围墙边。■alongside of 在…的侧面,与…并排:The two ships lay alongside of each other. 两条船并排靠着。
aloud[E5laud] adv.出声地,大声地:Please read aloud. 请大声朗读。/ The pain made her cry aloud. 疼痛使她大声叫喊。/ He cried aloud for help. 他高声呼救。
【说明】aloud有两个用法,一是表示“出声”,即把话说出来,而不是在心里默默地“说”,通常与动词 read, speak, think 等动词连用;二是表示“大声”,通常与动词 cry, laugh, shout, call 等连用。
alphabet[5AlfEbet] n.[C]字母表:The English alphabet has 26 letters. 英语全套字母共26个。
already[C:l5redi] adv.已经:He already knew about it. 那时他已知道此事了。/ We have finished our work already. 我们已经完成了工作。/ She had already gone when I arrived. 我到的时候她已经走了。
【说明】一般用于肯定句,不用于否定句或疑问句(此时用 yet),不过有时在疑问句中也用它,主要是用来表示惊讶(且多用于句末):Ishe back already? 他怎么就回来了?
also[5C:lsEu] adv. 也,还,而且:He is also ill. 他也病了。/ He has also seen the film. 他也看过这部电影。/ The Japanese also eat rice. 日本人也吃米饭。/ That dress is pretty, and cheap also. 那件衣服很漂亮,而且便宜。■not only…but also… 不但…而且…:She likes not only music but also sport. 她不但喜欢音乐而且喜欢运动。
【辨析】also, either, too与as well(也):also, too 和 as well 都用于肯定句和疑问句,但位置不同,also大多放在主要动词之前或动词be、情态动词、助动词之后;too一般放在句末,可用逗号隔开,也可不用;as well通常置于句末,通常不用逗号隔开;either 只用于否定句,且只能放在句末。
alternative[R:l5tE:nEtiv] adj.可替代的,其他的:We have an alternative plan. 我们还有一个方案。n.[C]替换物,可能的选择,可能性之一:There are three alternatives. 有三者可供选择。/ There is no other alternative. 别无他法。
【说明】have no alternative to doing sth 与 have no alternative but to do sth 大致同义,均表示“除了做某事外没有其他的办法”,但前一结构中的 to 是介词,后接动词要用动名词,后者的 but 后要接带 to 的不定式:He had no alternative to staying at home.= He had noalternative but to stay at home. 他没有别的办法,只好呆在家里。
although[C:l5TEu] conj.尽管,虽然:Although it was snowing, it was not very cold. 虽然在下雪,但并不是很冷。/ There is air around us, although we can’t see. 尽管我们看不见,但我们的周围全是空气。
【说明】不要根据汉语习惯,在后面使用连词but, 不过有时它可与 yet, still, nevertheless 等副词连用:Although we are poor, yet we are happy. 尽管我们穷,但我们很快活。
【辨析】although与though:1.用作连词表示“虽然”时,两者常可换用。2. although 一般不用作副词,而 though 可用作副词:It’s hardwork; I enjoy it though. 工作很辛苦,可是我乐意干。3.在as though(好像,仿佛),even though(即使,纵然)等固定短语中不能用 although。4. though 引导的让步状语从句可用部分倒装的形式,但 although 不这样用:Child though he was, he did quite well. 他虽是孩子,但干得很好。
altitude[5Altitju:d] n.1.[C]海拔,高度:What is the altitude of this village? 这个村子海拔多少? 2.(常用复)海拔很高的地方:In these altitudes, snow never melts. 在这么高的地方,积雪终年不化。
