One day, my father and I were standing at the top of a high building. He brought me to this spot in a small town not far from our home in Rome. I wondered why.
“Look down, Alice,” Father said. I gathered all my courage and looked down. I saw the square in the center of the village. And I saw the criss-cross (纵横交错) of streets leading to the square. “See, my dear ,” Father said gently. “There is more than one way to the square. Life is like that. If you can’t get to the place where you want to go by one road, try another.”
Now I understood why I was there. Earlier that day I had begged my mother to do something about the awful lunches that were served at school. But she refused because she didn’t believe the lunches were as bad as I said.
When I turned to Father for help, he would not interfere (干涉). Instead, he brought me to this high tower to give me a lesson. By the time we reached home, I had a plan.
At school the next day, I secretly poured my lunch soup into a bottle and brought it home. Then I
and said angrily, “The cook must have gone bad!” Quickly I told what I had done, and Mother stated firmly that she would deal with the matter of lunches at school the next day!
In the following years I often remembered the lesson Father taught me. I began to work as a fashion designer two years ago. I wouldn’t stop working until I tried every possible means to my goal. Father’s wise words always remind me that there is more than one way to the square.

As we know, having ended a busy day, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health. During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day.
There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body changes from one level of sleep to the other.
Although your mind slows down, you will dream from time to time. Scientists who study sleep point out that when you are dreaming, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement.
If you have trouble falling asleep, some people suggest breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.

It is a story that happens on Christmas Eve. Snow falls gently on the ground. Off in the distance I hear the voice of approaching carolers (唱颂歌的人). I quickly close the door shutting out the sounds of Christmas. Tonight is just too painful as I think of “Christmas without them”.
Is Christmas eve the same when we are without our loved ones? The traditions I have loved since childhood have changed into something new and unexpected. As an adult, I find myself with feelings of a five-year-old kid, scared and alone. I have no mother or father to comfort me. Tears flow and I feel my heart breaking. Sometimes, I find myself standing in the midst of strangers with tears running down my cheeks. Some people, forgetting they are strangers, stop to offer a knowing smile of understanding. And I begin to realize I am not alone with these types of feelings. All of a sudden the memories come flooding back.
How fortunate I am to have such wonderful memories of my parents and the times we shared when I was young. Just as quickly as the memories brought tears the same memories appeared again. Memories have a way of making the emptiness bearable. I remember. I smile.
My thoughts once again return to the children. Their sounds of singing grow closer. I open my door to find their half-frozen faces, smiling brightly at me.
Christmas without them may never be the same, but from out of the darkness pleasant memories flood my heart. I can almost hear my parents’ voices telling me the story of this most holy night. Like a message from above, I listen as the children sing, “Sleep in heavenly peace”.

A. Christmas without them B. Traditions of Christmas
C. Approaching carolers D. Unforgettable historical facts

Do you have a smartphone? It may let you surf the Internet, listen to music and take photos wherever
you are, but it also turns you into a workaholic(工作狂), it seems.
A study suggests that, by giving you access to emails at all times, the all-singing, all-dancing mobile phone adds as much as two hours to your working day. Researchers found that Britons work an additional 460 hours a year on average as they are able to respond to emails on their mobiles.
The study by technology retailer (零售商) Pixmania reveals (披露) the average UK working day is between 9 and 10 hours, but a further two hours is spent responding to or sending work emails, or making them more than 20 times a day. Almost one in ten admits spending up to three hours outside their normal working day checking work emails. Some workers say they are on call almost 24 hours a day, with nine out of ten saying they make work emails and calls outside their normal working hours. The average time for first checking emails is between 6 am and 7 am, with more than a third checking their first emails in this period, and a quarter checking them between 11 pm and midnight.
Ghadi Hobeika, marketing director of Pixmania, said, “The ability to access literally millions of apps, keep in contact via social networks and take photos and video as well as text and call has made smartphones invaluable for many people. However, there are drawbacks(缺点). Many companies expect their employees to be on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and smartphones mean that people literally cannot get away from work. The more constantly in contact we become , the more is expected of us in a work capacity (能力).”

第二卷(非选择题 满分35分)
第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节 任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
We shouldn’t blame the weight problems only on fast food and too much TV time. A group of researchers say that a number of aspects (方面) of modern living — from lack of sleep to environmental chemicals and to living with air conditioning — may be closely related to the weight problems of many people.
Lack of sleep is one factor (因素). Research in animals and humans suggests that a lack of sleep over a long period of time can increase appetite (食欲). Studies also show that many adults and children are sleeping less than they used to. In recent decades adults have gone from sleeping for an average of nine hours to about seven hours.
There is also evidence that industrial chemicals may increase body fat. These chemicals, which are used in products, change hormonal (荷尔蒙) activity when they get into the body. Studies suggest that people have been getting more and more of these chemicals through the food chain in recent decades.
Another factor that may be making people overweight is air conditioning. The body burns calories
when forced to control its own temperature, and people tend to eat less in hot and wet weather, but air conditioning (空调) makes it unnecessary for the body to make any adjustment (调整) .
Researchers also list other possible risk factors for overweight, including more older mothers, whose children may become overweight more easily; a number of medicines which can lead to weight gain; and fewer people who smoke, since people often gain weight when they stop smoking because nicotine can make people eat less.
No one is suggesting that people should stop working and sleep more, or keep smoking. When it comes to any person’s weight, what really matters is what they eat and how much of the food they eat
