1. Introduction
There are many rolling bearing applications calling for an exact radial clearance or preload of the mounted bearings.
In such cases the radial clearance or preload must be adjusted during mounting. The prerequisite is an exact measurement of the diameter over rollers.
The boundary circle measuring instrument FAG MGA 31 measures, with a precision of 1 micron, the diameters over rollers of the inner ring/roller assembly of cylindrical roller bearings FAG NN 3006 K to NN 3038 K (detachable outer ring, tapered bore from 30 to 190mm diameter). The radial clearance or preload can be adjusted with the same precision.
In spite of there precision theFAG boundary circle measuring instrument are easy to handle. Their sturdy design makes them especially suitable for shop use.
Due to the design of the boundary circle measuring instrument each bearing requires an extra instrument. Please indicate the bearing design to be mounted in the order.
Special design on request.
2. Set up
The measuring instrument consists of a sturdy frame and two hardened, face to face arranged, precision ground steel segments which from the measuring areas and take the boundary circle diameter. The upper segment is bolted to the measuring instrument where as a lower one is radially adjustable in preloaded ball guides.
The adjustable segment is set through a turning knob. It acts through a measuring ring on the dial indicator.
The boundary circle measuring instrument FAG MGA 31 is used together with a commonly used inside diameter gauge.

4. Setting
For measurements the bearing outer ring must already be mounted. The inner ring together with the cage/roller complement must already be mounted on the shaft and hand tightened.
1. Apply measuring pin for the appropriate outer
ring raceway diameter.
Apply inside diameter gauge into outer ring and
try to find smallest diameter by moving the
gauge up and down (point of return of dial
indicator pointer).
2. In this position set dial indicator of the inside
diameter gauge to zero.
3. Place boundary circle measuring instrument
into stand and turn adjusting knob clockwise to
stop.
4. Insert inside diameter gauge into boundary
circle measuring instrument and turn adjusting
knob of the boundary circle measuring
insrument anticlockwise until the dial indicator
of the insidediameter gauge reads zero.
5. Remove inside diameter gauge and set dial
indicator of the boundary circle measuring
instrument to zero.
6. Turn adjusting knob of the boundary circle
measuring instrument clockwise until it can
easily be slipped on the inner ring with
cage/roller assembly. Turn adjusting knob
anticlockwise until there is no resistance. The
adjustable segment is pressed against the
rollers by spring force. Thus the boundary circle
measuring instrument is centered.
7. Push inner ring onto the tapered shaftseat
until the dial indicator of the boundary circle
measuring instrument shows the desired
dimension. In the picture this is done with the
aid of an oil pump and a hook spanner.
