My ideal graduate English teaching
A: Hello, Jean.
B: Hi, Judy. What are you doing?
A: Well! My teacher asks me to write an article about “my ideal graduate English teaching”. I’m preparing for it. Do you have any ideas?
B: Um… I think graduate English teaching aims at training students’ practical competence effectively at a higher level. So it should highlight the practical application. Only in this way can those graduates be comprehensively improved. A: Yes. You are right. So in my mind, the student-centered teaching method should be put to use. Because it can not only improve the students’ English skill, but also strengthen the interaction between students and teachers.
B: In addition, it can also foster the students' spirit of cooperation and the ability of innovative. And I think the number of each class should be controlled in 30. Then students will be much accounted of and can communicate well with their teachers.
A: I can’t agree with you more. With so many students in one class, I always can’t listen clearly to the teacher and have few chances to communicate with our teacher. What’s more, would you like more advanced English courses be opened besides the existing courses such as basic reading and speaking?
B: Good idea! For example, LELTS, TOEFL, translation of science and technology, Overview of British and American culture, English film appreciation, English practical writing, etc.
A: Yeah! And also international conference exchange English. By the way, many universities have already established English language Practice Centers aim to provide students a site to practice English and study independently, do you think that will be more and more popular in the future?
B: Yes, I do. It can provide us with all sorts of study resource and more personalized study method guidance for Language learning methods diagnosis, speech correction, and language ability evaluation and so on. Since our university has no one yet, I always dream to have an English language Practice Center in our university.
A: The same to me. Ok! You have give me a lot of inspiration about my ideal graduate English teaching. Thank you!
B: That’s all right. I will call you later. See you later.
A: See you.
Traditional Chinese way of strict parenting
A: Hello, Jean.
B: Hi, Judy. Long time no see. What are you doing recently?
A: I read a book named “Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother” recently. Do you know about it?
B: Yes. Of course. It was written by Yale law professor Amy Chua. Her views are controversial even with her own husband and her book has already become one of the most controversial books in 2011.
A: You are right. Traditional Chinese parenting has been labeled as “authoritarian” by some researchers. Authoritarian parenting is a style of child-rearing that emphasizes high standards and a tendency to control kids through shaming, the withdrawal of love, or other punishments.
B: But Researchers like Ruth Chao argue that the authoritarian label doesn’t quite map onto the strict, controlling parenting style of many traditional Chinese. “Authoritarian” implies that parents are rather cold and distant. But strict Chinese parents enjoy a sense of closeness with their kids.
A: Yeah. The traditional approach to Chinese parenting isn’t just about strict rules. And the kids may interpret their parents’ coercive tactics as evidence that they are loved. This, says Chao, is why some studies have failed to show a link between poor outcomes and authoritarian parenting among Chinese immigrants. Unlike children in Western authoritarian families--children who feel alienated by their parents--the Chinese kids feel connected.
B: What’s more, whether or not traditional Chinese parents are authoritarian, there is much more going on. We Chinese kids have two big advantages that have little do with authoritarianism: Chinese parents emphasize effort, not innate ability. Chinese peers support them when they work hard at school.
A: Yes. Traditional Chinese parenting has one clear advantage over contemporary Western parenting: Chinese parents--like many other Asian parents--are more likely to emphasize effort over innate talent. Experiments show that people learn more when they believe that effort, not innate intelligence, is the key to achievement. And other research suggests that Westerners are more likely to assume that a child fails because he lacks innate ability.
B: Yeah. Effort--and the belief that effort pays off--is a key ingredient to Chinese success. Chua herself makes this point in the Wall Street Journal. She doesn’t let her kids believe they can’t succeed. But some educators in China have expressed concern that traditional Chinese parenting doesn’t foster creativity or divergent thinking. And it seems reasonable to assume that kids won’t develop skills they don’t practice.
A: Well. Like a coin has two sides, there is a positive aspect and a negative aspect to our traditional Chinese way of strict parenting.
B: Yes. I agree with you. And we should take the essence and discard the dregs.

B: And the emission of carbon dioxide which scientists say is a major cause of global warming.
A:Nowadays ,Low-carbon life is becoming a popular topic.
B:Right, Low-carbon life encourages people to minimize energy use and greenhouse gas emission,. In other words, we are encouraged to leave less carbon footprint in our daily life. What do you think about this?
A:Yes ,there are some actions creates a certain amount of carbon dioxide. All those activities can put strains on the environment and lead to a worsening climate change.
B:I really agree with your ideas. That’s why low-carbon lifestyle is advocated. And that’s why low-carbon lifestyle is also called environment-friendly lifestyle. A:Everybody has to share the responsibility to tackle climate change. B:Some changes in your life can make a big difference to the environment.

B:Well, Firstly, choose public transport instead of private cars. Secondly, switch your computers, air conditioners, and other electronic appliances to energy-saving mode;
A;I think choose energy-efficient bubbles is also a good idea.
B;Right! Find out what the recycling options are in your area. Then make sure you keep items such as paper and plastic bottles separate so that they can be recycled ,then use reusable carrier bags, cups, chopsticks as more environmentally-friendly alternatives to disposable commodities.
A;In this way, we can make our environment better.
