Have you ever heard of a computer that saved a person’s life?
It was about two Chinese university students who saved their classmate’s life by sending a message on the Internet. This girl was a biology student at Beijing University. She was rushed to the hospital in terrible pain and then slipped into a coma.The doctors tested for everything they could think of but got negative results on everything.
She had two middle school classmates going to Beijing university. The girl’s mother told them all about her symptoms and that the doctors seemed powerless to save her. One of her friends had an E-mail address at the university. He knew that foreign medical experts could be contacted through computer “news-group ”. He looked through the directory until he found several that looked promising and sent out his SOS message.They said their friend was dying and told all they could about her case history.
The message went to many sites, but the one to pick up on it was a doctor in Washington, D.C. He had worked in China and was familiar with many of the doctors at the girl’s hospital. He contacted some of his colleagues through the Internet, asking them to search for specialists who could help. There were doctors all over the world responding to the cry for help. Fortunately, the doctor in Washington suspected it was a chemical poisoning .He even had the correct chemical. The treatment suggested by the Los Angeles Poison Control Center was sent to the U. S. Embassy in Beijing and thet rushed it over to the hospital.
