Dolores noticed that many of her students were not getting enough food to eat. Some of them wore very old clothes. Dolores wondered how she could help them.
Dolores liked teaching but she decided to quit her job so that she could spend more time helping her students and their families. One thing she wanted to do was to get more pay for their parents, farm workers. Thus they could buy their children what they needed.
Dolores knew that many farm workers moved often from one place to another to help pick different kinds of fruits and vegetables, like grapes and tomatoes. She began talking and writing about these workers. Even people who lived far from California read what Dolores wrote. Getting higher pay for the farm workers was not easy. The Pursuit of Happiness
Perhaps the most curious and interesting phrase ever put into a public document is “the pursuit (追求) of happiness”.
It is declared to be an inalienable (不可剥夺的) right. It cannot be sold. It cannot be given away, either.
The pursuit of happiness! It is not strange that men call it a dream. But I am satisfied that it is not happiness itself, but the pursuit, that is a dream. Instead of thinking of the pursuit, why not fix our thoughts upon the moments, the hours, the days, of this wonderful peace, this merriment of body and mind, that can be repeated and continually extended by the simplest of all means? Perhaps the Latin poet was right in saying that no man can count himself happy while in this life, that is, in a continuous state of happiness. The point I make is that we should not habitually postpone that season of happiness to the future.
Sometimes wandering in an ancient forest, in all the magic power of the woods, surrounded by the kindliest nature, the wild flowers in the trail, the call of the squirrels, the singing of the birds, the howl of the wind, and the spots of sunlight on the brown carpet, I find myself unaware of the beauty and postpone my enjoyment until I shall reach a hoped-for open place of full sun.
The comparison cannot be pushed, for it is the common experience that these open spots in life, where relaxation and contentment await us, are usually grown up with barriers, to say nothing of the labors and duties and difficulties.
The pitiful part of this inalienable right to the pursuit of happiness is, however, that most men interpret it to mean the pursuit of wealth, and struggle for that always, postponing being happy until they get a fortune, in the end to find that the happiness has gone. They have not developed that in themselves which alone can bring happiness. More than that, they have lost the power of the enjoyment of the basic pleasures of life. I think that in our day a poor woman who put her little money into the contribution-box gets more happiness out of that than some men have experienced in founding a university.
59. In the passage, the author advises the readers to ________.
A. live in the present
B. spend time in nature
C. carry out their duties
D. give money to the poor
60. What can be concluded from the passage?
A. The main goal of life is pleasure.
B. It is easier to be happy if you are wealthy.
C. Life is full of duties and difficulties as well as beauties.
D. People have the power to control the quality of their lives.
61. The underlined phrase “ in Paragraph 5 indicates that the woman ________.
A. gained wealth eagerly
B. donated money regularly
C. spread happiness constantly
D. gave what she could willingly
62. The passage is most probably ________.
A. a political speech B. a welcome speech

Dear Sir,
I read your May 10th column (专栏) about electronic books, or e-books, with great interest. You made several good points about the disadvantages of e-books. But you may not have noticed some of the ways in which they are better than traditional books. Yes, e-books are expensive, but actually they are convenient, effective and environment-friendly.
E-books, for anyone who is unfamiliar with the term, are about the same size and shape as regular books. They
have a large screen in the middle, however. This screen shows the reader a page of text that has been downloaded from a computer. Once the reader has finished reading the page on the e-book screen, he or she moves the text down to see a new page. The process continues until the entire book has been read.
As you pointed out, Mr. Slocum, it’s great to lie on a warm, sandy beach with a book. You can do that just as easily with an e-book as you can with a traditional paper book. In fact, because e-books are so light, you can take them wherever you wouldn’t want to take paper books. Say, for example, that you like to read on the bus. Which would you rather carry with you—a heavy 800-page novel, or an e-book that weighs only a few ounces (盎司)?
Another important advantage is offered by e-books as well. They are more environment-friendly than traditional books. Currently, thousands of trees are cut down each year to meet the publishing industry’s demand for paper. Books that don’t sell are eventually returned to the publisher and destroyed. This shocking waste could be avoided if everyone used e-books, which require no paper.
Sincerely,
David Eng
