The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was written by the prominent British writer Robert Louis Stevenson. When it comes to Stevenson, we must single a famous book out for a special mention, and it is his first book Treasure Island. In 1883, the publication of Treasure Island let Stevenson fame. Maybe lots of people have already read it. And The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is one of Stevenson's triumphant masterpieces, it is a work that rich of imagination and it is also a pioneer in psychological novel .Besides, because Dr. Jekyll’s and Mr. Hyde’s entirely different personalities are impressive in this book, "Jekyll and Hyde" has stood as a synonym for "alternating personality" in psychology. All in all, personally I think most of the readers would like the compact, stimulating and cliff-hanging story development process in this novel. Moreover , reading this novel just like watching a taut suspense detective film. And to my way of thinking, the contents of this work might make some people feel a little terrified.
As the case stands, when I first read this title, I was full of curiosity to read this novel. This title can arouse the interest of many people. And when it comes to the contents of this work, it is about a London lawyer named John Gabriel Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend Dr Henry Jekyll and the evil Edward Hyde. Utterson is a basic character, and we can regard him as a witness of the development of this story, and he was always brave enough to seek the truth. We would naturally put ourselves in Utterson’s position. Then when we speak of Dr. Jekyll ,the outside world saw a serious ,hard-working doctor .Behind this quiet character, however ,was an active, fun-loving and irresponsible young man-about-town. This, of course, was nothing to be ashamed of,but he did not realize that at the time.He was ashamed, and he soon learned to use a drug that create on his own to keep his two lives separate. Both these people were him .The serious, successful young doctor was Dr. Jekyll ,and the wild, fun-loving and irresponsible young man was Hyde.Dr. Jekyll enjoyed his secret at first, but the situation soon changed. Over time, Mr. Hyde grew in power. He became easier to turn into Mr. Hyde, this devil hurt a child in the street, and he even became a mad man and beat Sir Danvers to death-for no reason at all at one night. Because of taking the drug repetitively, he would soon became Hyde forever, so he left behind a confession and bring the life of unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end .Dr. Jekyll Is the greatest tragic role in this novel, and all the readers just like Utterson who learned all the truth from Dr.Jekyll ’s confession. Finally all the things seems unexpected but justified.
We have to admit that in fact every man has two sides to his character. But it really doesn ’t matter if we have our own Mr. or Ms Hyde in our minds ,and actually we do have. We are well aware that the only question is, can we find a way to balance the two sides in our heart and maintain our mental health? Luckily, we are not Dr. Jekyll, and we live in the real world, we can’t create a drug to keep our two lives separate. I feel so regretful for Dr. Jekyll, and also learn from him. The story is a warning for us, so I proposed we must not let evil regained consciousness in our heart. We should review our behavior and restrain ourselves. In the course of time, we will have a good habit. This good habit once again rule your heart , then slowly it will bring you about impacts that benefits your whole life.
This book can be read as a terrorist suspense novel, but in fact it is also the first work to explore the form of alternating personality and dissociated personality. In my submission, the view is that his novel is sufficient to be called as a classical work is universally shared, and it is a rare work and deserve to be read.
