Introduction
The technology of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) was invented more than 30 years ago in the United States of America by the “father of HDD”, Mr. Martin Cherrington. Since then HDD has developed successfully around the world and is nowadays an established method for trenchless installation of pipelines under obstacles.
A lot of development has been made since the beginnings in some parts of the technology, e.g. in the fields of survey methods and mud technology, while other aspects nearly have been unchanged since the early days (e.g. drill pipes).
