Text 2
M: I wish Betty studies as hard as her brother.
W: Well, dear, I think she does all right. You worry about the kids too much. She’ll probably work harder in high school.

M: Well, I planned to play football, but I think I can help you first.

M: I failed the exam. I worked as hard as I could, but I failed.
W: Hard work isn’t the whole story. You should have mastered the basic techniques of study.
Text 6
M: One day when I was eating in a restaurant in small village, I had a lot of difficulty explaining to the waiter what I wanted.
W: What did you have?
M: I wanted a glass of milk. But I didn’t know the English word.
W: So, how did you solve the problem?
M: Finally, I drew a picture of a cow on the back of the menu, and I showed him how to get the milk from the cow.
W: Did you get what you wanted?
M: Well, the waiter left and was gone for almost half an hour. When he returned at last, he was followed by a cow. And I had to leave at that moment.
Text 7
W: It’s freezing here. What’s wrong with the heat?
M: I have no idea. Why don’t we go out?
W: Out? It’s snowing outside!
M: I mean going to somewhere warm. For example, we can go to the theater. I think Total Recall is on at the theater around the corner.
W: Total Recall! It’s three hours long!
M: Oh, Jane, it’s only about two.
W: Really?
M: Come on, Jane. It will be nice and warm in the theater. Let ’s see... It ’s a quarter after seven now. The newspaper says that there will be a show at 7:30.
Text 8
W: Well. You know the people in room 247?
M: The Smith, yes. They are not rich.
W: Yes. You know they always order the really cheap things and they always pay cash. And they always give really small tips...
M: Yes.
W: I gave them breakfast this morning. And after breakfast I was cleaning the table and I found a wallet. M: A wallet? Whose wallet?
W: I didn’t know. So I opened it and I was looking for a name when Mr Smith came back into the restaurant. “That ’s my wallet,” he said. He was very angry.
M: Was he?
W: Yes. So I gave him the wallet and he left. It was very strange.
M: Why?
W: I saw the name in the wallet...
M: Smith.
W: No! No! The name in the wallet wasn’t “Smith ”. It was “Johnson ”.
Text 9
M: Hi, what are you doing?
W: I’m cleaning the house.
M: Can you go to the movies with me this afternoon?
W: I don’t think so. Right now I’m sweeping the floor. Then I have to wash the floors and wash and iron all the clothes.
M: Aren’t your sister and your mother helping you?
W: No. They usually help, but today my sister is playing tennis and my mother’s writing.
M: That’s too bad. Asian Sun is playing at the theater. They say it’s good. And I want to go to that new Chinese restaurant.
W: Well, you could come over later this afternoon and watch TV with me.
M: I have a good idea. Why don’t I come over and help you with your work?
W: Would you?
M: Sure, why not? I’ll be over in half an hour.
Text 10
Good afternoon and welcome to England. We hope your visit here will be a pleasant on. Today, I would like to draw your attention to a few of our laws and other matters of importance.
Firstly, about drinking. Here you may not buy hard drinks or wines if you are under 18. Nor may your friends buy for any for you. That’s also against the law.
Secondly, noise. Enjoy yourselves by all means. Buy please don’t make an unnecessary noise, particularly at night. You are supposed to respect all the people who may wish to be quiet.
Thirdly, crossing the road. The traffic moves on the left side of the road in the country, so be careful when crossing the road.
My next point is about rubbish. Don’t drop waste paper, cigarette ends, etc., in the street.
Finally, smoking. You may not buy cigarettes or tobacco if you’re under 16. I’d like to finish by saying that if you need any sort of help or assistance, go to the police who will be pleased to help you.
Thank you for your attention and enjoy your stay here.
