Ask a person to think of something about Australian and he or she will usually pick kangaroos, which have pockets to feed and carry their babies.
Kangaroos live in Australia, Tasmania, New Guinea, and New Zealand. They have large hind legs, a strong tail, small forelegs, and long ears. They live on grass and plants. They usually get around by hopping. A kangaroo uses its strong, long tail to keep balance while it’s running or sitting on it while it is resting.
There are nearly 50 kinds of kangaroos. The largest is the gray kangaroo, which can be over 2 meters tall and almost 3m long. It can weigh 80 kg (200 lbs). The fastest can travel up to 48-60 kilometers an hour, almost as fast as a racing greyhound(灰狗, 美客运公司).
The birth of these animals is very interesting. The female gives to birth once a year. The young are born after the mother has it 30 and 40 days. The tiny, blind, hairless animal, weighing as little as a quarter of an ounce (盎司), makes its way to the pocket of its mother. After about six or seven months, the rapidly growing young kangaroo leaves the pocket for short periods, returning to suckle or rest.
Kangaroos have found an enemy in humans. For many years they were caught for pet food and for their fur, or because they were said not good to the grass lands of sheep and cattle. It’s not really so.

The earth is our home; we must take care of it. This means keeping the land, air and water clean.
Pollution is a dirty word. To pollute means to make things unfit or unclean to use. Pollution comes in many ways. We see it, smell it, taste it and drink it. Pollution is beginning to threaten our health, our happiness and our life.
Man has been polluting the earth from the time he first made fire, washed his clothes in the river and threw his waste on the ground. When land was used up or water became dirty, men moved on to another place. At first the problem was not so serious because there was plenty of clean air, land and water. There weren’t so many people then and their wants were fewer. All the dirty things could be absorbed by nature and soon covered over. But this is no longer true. The increase of population and the development of industry have changed that. Man is slowly poisoning his environment.
Through the use of poison, man has polluted the land, killing the animals. By putting dirty water and chemicals into rivers and lakes we have polluted our drinking water, killing the fish.
Our increasing population is part of the problem. More people more waste.
Where is this all to end? Are we turning the world into a big rubbish dump, or is there any hope that we can get rid of the pollution? Fortunately, millions of people have been warned of the danger of pollution. Large numbers of people are now working hard to bring pollution under control.
