Passage1.
“Joe?”
A man was talking to me in the sports center.
“Jack?”
“It’s you!” he said excitedly. “It’s really good to see you again!”
It was good to see Jack, too. I had heard that he hadn’t been in good health over the past few years. So it was a surprise to meet him in the sports center.
We talked about the good old days. Suddenly, he said, “You know, Joe. I’ve always wanted to tell you how
sorry I was for that thing that I did.”
His words took me back to the old days when we were good friends. One day, we were playing football in the
sports center. And Jack broke a window by accident. However, when the manager came out to see what had happened, Jack told him that Joe broke the window. From then on, we weren’ t good friends any more, and his family moved away later.
“It’s ok,” I said.” It’s not important to me any more.”
“But I was so sorry. I was very afraid to be beaten by my father, if he got to know it…”
“it’s all right. Let’s just forget about it. We were both very young at that time.”
“I know. But it has bothered (困扰)me. And I’ve been waiting to tell you that I was sorry…”

We work hard to learn English well, but do you know that many students in the US are working hard to learn Chinese?
As China’s influence grows, parents and education experts in the US think Chinese speakers may have greater opportunities(机会).
The number of schools that teach Chinese has grown. Ten years ago, only about 300 schools in the US had Chinese lessons. Today, about 1,600 schools teach Chinese.
Lomond Elementary School in Ohio is one of them. Each week, all students in grades one through five have a one-hour Chinese class. They learn the language through songs, games and lots of talking.
“We’re trying to make students interested in the language,” teacher James J Paces told Time For Kids. “We think it’s really important that all children receive these lessons,” he says. “We’d like to do even more.”
“Schools are looking to the future,” says Nancy C. Rhodes, a US education expert. “China is becoming a really powerful country. Young people should not only know the language but understand the culture.”
Students may not be thinking about the future, but they think learning Chinese language and culture is fun. “When you hear people speaking in Chinese, you know what they’re saying,” said Stacy Valley, 11, from California. “And they don’t know that you know.”
“I wish I could go to China one day and see what it’s like,” said Tautiana Anderson, 11, from Miami.

The statue of Liberty is one of the most famous tourist places in the United States. However, it wasn’t the
Americans who designed and built it. It was given as a gift of friend-ship by the people of France.
In 1865, a young French artist named Bartholdi took part in a big party near the town of Versailes(凡尔赛). At
the party, so meone suggested giving America a special gift for the country’s hundredth birthday in 1876. Bartholdi was interested in the idea and advised to build a big statue. Back home, he thought about it for the next six years. By 1871, Bartholdi had planned most of the details (细节) of the statue. It was going to be a lady called Liberty, who held a torch (火炬) high over her head in her right hand and a book close to her body in her left hand. It seemed that she was lightening the way to freedom.
It was such a huge project that a large amount of money was needed. And also, for various reasons, Bartholdi
and his team couldn’t finish it on time. Work on the big statue wasn’t finished until June,1884. On July 22nd ,1885, it arrived in New York form France by sea. The statue was finally placed on a small island near New York in April,1886.
The statue of Liberty was about ten years late! But better late than never!
