On my first day in America, I was excited, but nervous as well. It was my dear neighbor Susan who helped me get used to my new life far away from home. There was a knock at the door. When I opened it, Susan came in with a home-made apple pie. She hugged me and said: “You must be the precious Chinese doll!” With a big smile, she went on: “Alice, I am sure you have
never, ever tried a home-made apple pie before! You are going to love it so much!” To be honest, I was greatly surprised by this welcome from a stranger. And the apple pie made me feel at home.
Susan was very helpful to me. When I was thinking about a costume to wear on Halloween, she suggested I dress up like a traditional Chinese girl. “I happen to have a traditional Chinese dress and guess what, I am a great make-up artist!” she said. Susan didn’t hide her excitement, when, after an hour of hard work, she pushed me to the mirror to examine our work. The clothes fit me perfectly! I am sure that I from the crowd that Halloween, and I am very grateful to Susan for her help.
My first Thanksgiving was another highlight. On the festival morning, I was surprised to find a gift box in my front yard. There was a note on it: “Hello Alice, I am the Thanksgiving bunny! Enjoy your gift!” I looked around and caught Susan looking at me from the porch(走廊). Seeing that she had been caught, she awkwardly picked up a newspaper and pretended to read it. I couldn’t help laughing. When I walked up to her, she said: “It was not me. It was the Thanksgiving bunny!” Susan is such a lovely person; she is the American above all others I need to thank.

Who taught you to speak English? Your parents, while you were a child? Your teacher at school? Perhaps even the BBC as a grown-up. Whoever it was, somehow you have developed an understanding of what is rapidly becoming a truly global language.
There are now about 376 million people who speak English as their first language, and about the same number who have learnt it in addition to their mother tongue. There are said to be one billion people learning English now and about 80% of the information on the Internet is in English.
Is this a good thing, or a bad thing? Should we celebrate the fact that more and more of us can communicate, using a common language, across countries and cultures? Or should we worry about the dangers of “ mono-culturalism”, a world in which we all speak the same language, eat the same food and listen to the same music?
Does it matter if an increasing number of people speak the same language? I would have
thought the other way around, although I have never accepted the argument that if only we all understood each other better, there would be fewer wars. Ask the people of India (where many of them speak at least some English) and Pakistan( the same situation with India) ...
If we all speak English, will we then all start eating McDonalds burgers? Surely not. If English becomes more dominant(占主导地位的), it will kill other languages? I doubt it. When I travel in Africa or Asia, I am always surprised by how many people can speak not only their own language but often one or more other related languages, as well as English and perhaps some French or German as well.
When we discussed this on Talking Point a couple of years ago, we received a wonderfully poetic email from a listener in Ireland. “The English language is a beautiful language. Maybe it’s like a rose,” he said. “But who would ever want their garden just full of roses?”
Well, I love roses, and I think they make a beautiful addition to any garden. But the way I see it, just by planting a few roses, you don’t necessarily need to pull out everything else. If more and more people want to plant English roses, that’s fine by me.
69. By saying “Ask the people of India... and Pakistan” ( in Paragraph 4) , the author is trying to
show that _______.
A. speaking the same language doesn’t necessarily bring peace
B. wars can destroy the relationship between two countries
C. English doesn’t kill other languages
D. English is widely used in the world
70. What does “garden” in the last two paragraphs stand for?
A. Language. B. Family. C. The world. D. The universe.
71. The author would probably agree that ________.
A. it’s very hard to plant many kinds of flowers in a garden
B. it’s good for people from other countries to learn English
C. more and more people like to plant roses in their gardens
D. English is easier to learn than other languages
72. This passage is mainly about ________.
A. why English has become a global language
B. how many people in the world speak English
C. how people in the world learn English as a foreign language
D. whether we need to worry about English being a world language
D
Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake? Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite “Why, thank you,” but you knew Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices (good and bad) reflect about your personal qualities?
Choosing the right one is an art, I believe. It calls for empathy-the ability to put yourself into someone else’s feelings as sharply. We’re all able to do this; in fact, we’ve born with a kind of natural empathy (移情). After the earliest period of childhood, however, it needs to be reinforced(加强)-by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn’t, we’re not able to understand other people’s feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional(情感的)qualities.
Think back to the presents you’ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose shows your inner world. Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.
We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won’t make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.
73. The underlined expression “you had missed the mark” means “you had failed to ________”.
A. make her feel better B. keep your friendship
C. receive a present in return D. get the expected effect
74. Which of the following is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A. Natural empathy needs to be reinforced.
B. Emotional changes influence one’s choice of gifts.
C. Selecting the right gift is an ability people are born with.
D. Choosing gifts requires one to understand the receivers.
75. In the third paragraph, the author tells us that .
A. attention should be paid to the receiver’s responses
B. one learns from what he did in the past
C. the choice of gifts reflects one’s emotional qualities
D. one should spend more time choosing gifts
76. The best possible title for this passage is .
A. Ways of Choosing Gifts B. An Important Tradition.
C. Exchanging Presents D. Message in a Gift

Medicine comes in lots of different packages. Painkillers in a tablet can make your headache go away. Antibiotic cream (抗菌素膏) from a tube can prevent your cuts from becoming infected. But can medicine come packaged in chicken eggs?
A team of scientists from Scotland say “yes”. They’ve engineered special chickens that lay eggs with disease-treating drugs inside.
These eggs come from chickens that have been engineered to produce certain drugs inside their egg whites.
These drugs are made of molecules(分子)called proteins(蛋白质). Animals make thousands of proteins — they’re the main element in skin, hair, milk and meat. Since animals can make proteins easily, they’re good candidates (候选者) for making protein drugs.
Researchers have already made cows, sheep and goats pump out protein drugs in their milk. But chickens are cheaper to take care of, need less room, and grow faster than these other animals. Those qualities could make chickens a better choice to become living drug factories, says Simon Lillico of the Roslin Institute near Edinburgh, Scotland.
Lillico and a team of researchers changed chickens’ DNA — the code that tells cells how to make proteins — so that the birds’ cells made two protein drugs. One drug can treat skin cancer, and the other treats a nerve disease called multiple sclerosis (多发性硬化).
The scientists changed the chickens’ DNA so that the birds made these drugs only in their egg whites. This protects the chickens’ bodies from the drugs’ harmful effects and makes it easy for scientists to collect the drugs.
77. If you cut your finger, you may use ________ to cure it.
A. painkillers in a tablet B. antibiotic cream from a tube
C. chicken eggs D. protein drugs
78. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Scientists from Scotland have succeeded in packing medicine into chicken eggs.
B. The drugs are made of molecules called proteins.
C. Scientists chose chickens for their experiments because chicken eggs taste delicious.
D. The animals are good candidates for making protein drugs.
79. The drugs in special chicken eggs can ________.
A. treat lung cancer B. help reduce headache
C. change people’s DNA D. treat multiple sclerosis
80. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. eating eggs is the best choice for the patients now
B. scientists changed the chicken’s DNA and put all the drugs in chicken eggs
C. we may eat special eggs as drugs when we are sick in the future
D. the drugs produce harmful effects on the chicken’s bodies

Our Fears Can Change the Reality of the Situation
At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. In addition, our worries can change our understanding of what is reality and what is not. Here is a brief list of skills that you can use to help gain a better viewpoint on things during your anxious moments.
A person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off the problem. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fresh opinion on things.
Remember that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem worse. When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.
Be smart in how you deal with your fears and anxieties. Do not try to deal with everything all at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that drives you anxious, break the task into a series of smaller steps. Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what we worry about never comes true. Everything else you can leave in the hands of God.
It is not easy to deal with all of our fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it slow. All you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy.
A. Take it one step at a time and things will work out.
B. When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.
C. This will give you the confidence to manage your anxiety.
D. Instead of worrying about something that probably won’t happen, concentrate on what you
are able to do.
E. The next time you feel anxious, review your list and think about the good things that you
have in your life.
F. A good way to manage your worry is to challenge your negative thinking with positive
statements and realistic thinking.
G. Finishing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the stress more manageable and
increases your chances of success.
