Alia Sabur, from Northport,
N.Y ., US, went to college at age 10. And four years later, Sabur became a bachelor of science in Applied Mathematics summa cum laude (以最优等成绩) from Stony Brook University — the youngest female in US history to do so. Her education continued at Drexel University, where she earned a Master of Science and a Doctor of
Philosophy (哲学博士) in Materials Science and Engineering.
With an unlimited future ahead of her, Sabur directed her first career choice to teaching. “I really enjoy teaching,” she said. She was three days short of her 19th birthday in February, 2008, when she was hired to become a professor at Konkuk University in Seoul, Korea. This distinction made her the youngest college professor in history, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, beating the previous record held by Colin Maclaurin, a student of Isaac Newton, in 1717.
Although she doesn’t start until next month, Sabur has taken up teaching math and physics courses at Southern University in New Orleans. Sabur is old enough to teach in the city, but not to join her fellow professors in a bar after work. In Korea, where the drinking age is 20, she might have more luck. In traditional Korean culture, children are considered to be 1 year old when they are born, and add a year to their age every New Year instead of their actual birthday, so in Korea Sabur is considered 20.
On top of her unprecedented (空前的) academic achievements, Sabur has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do (跆拳道黑带). She is also a talented clarinet (竖笛) player who has performed with musicians like Lang Lang and Smash Mouth. So is there anything Sabur can’t do?
36. We can learn from the passage that Sabur is _____.
A. America’s youngest bachelor of science
B. Drexel University’s youngest student
C. the world’s youngest college professor
D. the world’s youngest female teacher
37. When Sabur was hired as a professor, her actual age is _____.

38. What does the author mean by saying “she might have more luck” (in Paragraph
3)?
A. Sabur might be permitted to drink in a Korean bar. B. Sabur would be allowed to attend parties in Korea.
C. Sabur is old enough to teach at Konkuk University.
D. Sabur is lucky to be hired by Konkuk University.
39. What does the author mainly want to show in the last paragraph?
A. Sabur spends little time in study.
B. Sabur likes music more than sports.
C. Sabur has her own way to relax.
D. Sabur is talented in many ways.

Nearly 5 million people are living with HIV in Asia with about 440,000 dying each year, a report by an independent commission.
The commission on AIDS in Asia warned that even after two decades AIDS remains the most likely cause of death.
The report, entitled “Redefining AIDS in Asia — Crafting an effective response ” was released and presented to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. It noted that at the current rate, an additional 8 million people will become newly infected by 2020, and the annual death toll will increase to almost 500,000 by that time.
“By implementing (执行) the recommendations of the commission, Asian countries can avert (防止) massive increases in infections and death, prevent economic losses and save millions of people from poverty,” Ban said on handover of the report at the UN Headquarters.
However, the report observed that the number of people newly infected by 2020 can be kept to 3 million and the death toll to less than 300,000 if Asian leaders implement a priority (优先的) program right away.
The commission recommended that an annual investment of only 30 US cents per capita on focused prevention programs can reverse the epidemics, adding that by spending between half a dollar to 1 dollar per capita, depending on the prevalence (流行) rate in the country, 80 percent coverage of HIV prevention, treatment, care and livelihood security programs can be achieved.
Asian countries have the resources, the technology and organizational capacity for a vastly scaled up response to the AIDS epidemic, the commission said. “What is
required is political will of the governments in Asia and meaningful involvement of community-based organizations in the response.”
40. The best title for the passage would be “_____”.

B. AIDS has led to economic crisis in Asia.
C. Asian leaders haven’t paid enough attention to AIDS prevention programs.
D. Ban Ki-moon showed great satisfaction to Asian leaders’ swift actions.

ScienceDaily (Apr. 27, 2008) — Dutch ecologist Roxina Soler and her colleagues have discovered that subterranean (地下的) and aboveground herbivorous
(食草的) insects can communicate with each other by using plants as telephones. Subterranean insects issue chemical warning signals through the leaves of the plant. This way, aboveground insects are warned that the plant is already “occupied”.
Aboveground, leaf-eating insects prefer plants that have not yet been occupied by subterranean root-eating insects. Subterranean insects send out chemical signals through the leaves of the plant, which warn the aboveground insects about their presence. This messaging makes it possible for spatially-separated insects to avoid each other, so that they do not compete for the same plant.
In recent years it has been discovered that different types of aboveground insects develop slowly if they feed on plants that also have subterranean insects and vice versa (反之亦然). It seems that a mechanism (机制) has developed through natural selection, which helps the subterranean and aboveground insects to communicate with each other. This avoids unnecessary competition.
Through the “green telephone lines”, subterranean insects can also communicate with a third party, namely the natural enemy of caterpillars (毛虫). Parasitic wasps (寄生蜂) lay their eggs inside aboveground insects. The wasps also benefit from the signals sent by the leaves, as these help them find more insects for their eggs.
The communication between subterranean and aboveground insects has only been studied in a few systems. It is still not clear how widespread this phenomenon is, say the researchers.
46. How do subterranean and aboveground insects communicate with each other?
A. By sending signals through the leaves.
B. By giving off particular smells.
C. By making soft and beautiful sounds.
D. By the signals sent by parasitic wasps.
47. After finding a plant occupied by root-eating insects, aboveground insects will usually ______.
A. send out warning signals

A. are often visited by parasitic wasps
B. are not occupied by root-eating insects

Among the more colorful characters of Leadville’s golden age were H. A. W. Tabor and his second wife, Elizabeth McCourt, better known as “Baby Doe”. Their history is fast becoming one of the legends (传奇) of the Old West. Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a school teacher in Vermont. With his first wife and two children he left Vermont by covered wagon in 1855 to homestead (农庄) in Kansas. Perhaps he did not find farming to his liking, or perhaps he was tempted by rumors (传言) of fortunes to be made in Colorado mines. At any rate, a few years later he moved west to the small Colorado mining camp known as California Gulch, which he later renamed Leadville when he became its leading citizen. “Great deposits of lead are sure to be found here.” he said.
As it turned out, it was silver, not lead, that was to make Leadville’s fortune and wealth. Tabor knew little about mining himself, so he opened a general store, which sold everything from boots to salt, flour and tobacco. It was his custom to “grubstake” potential miners, in other words, to supply them with food and supplies, or “grub ”,
while they looked for ore (矿石), in return for which he would get a share in the mine if one was discovered. He did this for a number of years, but no one that he aided ever found anything of value.
Finally one day in the year 1878, so the story goes, two miners came in and asked for “grub”. Tabor had decided to quit supplying it because he had lost too much money that way. These persevered, however, and Tabor was too busy to argue with them. “Oh help yourself. One more time won’t make any difference,” He said and went on selling shoes and hats to other customers. The two miners took $17 worth of supplies, in return for which they gave Tabor a one-third interest in their findings. They picked a barren (贫瘠的) place on the mountainside and began to dig. After nine days they struck a rich vein (矿脉) of silver. Tabor bought the shares of the other two men, and so the mine belonged to him alone. This mine, known as the “Pittsburgh Mine,” made 1, 300, 000 for Tabor in return for his $17 investment. Later Tabor bought the Matchless Mine on another barren hillside just outside the town for $117, 000. This turned out to be even more fabulous than the Pittsburgh, yielding (产出) $35, 000 worth of silver per day at one time. Leadville grew. Tabor became its first mayor (市长), and later became lieutenant (副职的) governor of the state.
51. Leadville got its name for the following reasons EXCEPT ______.
A. Tabor became its leading citizen
B. Great deposits of lead are expected to be found there
C. It could bring good fortune to Tabor
D. It was renamed by Tabor himself.
52. The underlined word “grubstake” in Paragraph 2 most probably means ______.
A. to supply miners with food and supplies
B. to open a general store
C. to make one’s contribution to the development of the mine
D. to get a share, if any, in the mine by means of free provision for the miners
53. According to the passage, in which way did Tabor make his first fortune?
A. By supplying two potential miners and getting in return a one-third interest in the
findings.
B. By being persuaded to quit supplying and focus on personal savings.
C. By buying the shares of the others.
D. By being a landlord in resourceful possession of property.
54. The underlying reason for Tabor’s life career is ______.
A. purely by accident
B. based on the ana lysis of miner’s being very poor and their possibility of discovering profitable mining sites
C. through the help of his second wife
D. he planned well and accomplished targets step by step
55. If this passage is the first part of an article, who might be introduced in the following part?
A. Tabor’s life.
B. Tabor’s second wife, Elizabeth McCourt.
C. Other colorful characters.
D. Tabor’s other careers.

Today drug abuse and drug addiction are a serious problem all over the world. This is really worrying as almost all of us teenagers are vulnerable to the temptation of drugs. Therefore, knowing how to keep away from drugs is of great importance. Here are some suggestions:
Firstly, knowledge is power. As we know, many people fall into the habit of taking drugs out of ignorance. But when we are aware of the great dangers of drugs, we will be less likely to be tempted.
Secondly, be wise and responsible. Don’t experiment with something that we inherently know to be bad. Once addicted to the drugs, it’s difficult for you to get rid of them.
Thirdly, look out for peer pressure and don’t give into our friends’ persuasion, though it may be hard.
Anyway, we must believe that we can have a happy life without drugs.
